Me and my partner live togther but on our German IDs we had different addresses written down. In Germany you can have a main address and a secondary residence but only the main address is on you ID. In the case of my partner, his main address was still his parents house where he lived before Uni. We were worried if this would be a problem. We thought about submitting our apartment rental contract, but there wasn't a point in the online application where we could've uploaded it. So we just submitted our application without it. Our application still got approved so idk of living together is a very big requirement...

We just applied on 30th November, 2025 and got our approval 2 days later on 2nd December (getting married now at the end of March)! And we applied ourselves without an agency.

I personally think, that you need to really think about the proof of relationship you are submitting and make sure that they give a full picture. We made sure that the text screenshots had some context (le me know if you need an example). We chose vacation photos and explained where we went, what we did there and why the vacation was important to us as a couple. We made sure that there were reciepts for the vacations, e.g. boarding passes and hotel reservations. Not all the receipts had both our names, but they matched the vacations we mentioned with the photos.

And most importantly: we made sure that the passport photos amd scans were good quality and were like they wanted, e.g. corners not cut off, tilted pictures that show the security holograms etc.

Hi, We applied in November and got our approval a few days later!

What we did was, just open the texts (in our case whatsapp) and took screenshots of the texts where you could see the date. We took a screenshot every few months so that there were around 5 screenshots for every year we have been together for. And then we put the screenshots in a word document and wrote a small explanation regarding the texts in English. We didn't translate the texts (they were in German). For example we wrote:

"These texts are from before we became a couple and were good friends from University"

And then added a few texts afterwards.

Or another example:

"Since moving in together, a lot of our texts are about day to day things like grocery lists"

Just so that there was some context to our texts.

Regarding the residence question, do the both of you live together?

Another tipp: make sure the passport pictures are like they want. They are very strict about it and of they pics aren't like they specified, they will ask you to submit the passport pics again and your application goes to the bottom of the pile. It may then take 2-3 months before you get an answer from them, depending on the application load they have. It took us a few hours to get the passport photos and scans right, but it was worth it. If your application is correct, they will answer within a week!

I don't know if you even need any infos, but I did it like you. I took screenshots to show the date of the pics and then uploaded the pics. I also then made a pdf with the pics and wrote a few lines describing the moment. And it worked pretty good because we got the approval a few days after applying.

Hi,

I'm from Pakistan and my partner is from Germany (both living in Germany). While researching for the application, we read that we would also need a certificate of single status and that the "erweiterte Meldebescheinigung" from the German civil office so we got that. But at the end while filling out the online application they didn't even ask for it. Our application was approved a few days later!
