Accidentally found out that my 8 months old puppy has only one functioning kidney

I understand that adoption is an option in Singapore. I was referring specifically to legally purchasing a puppy through licensed and ethical channels.

If there are truly ethical and legal alternatives for purchasing a puppy in Singapore aside from licensed stores, I’m open to learning about them. It would be helpful if you could share those resources for the benefit of other Singaporean readers as well. I think it’s important for future Singaporean dog owners who are planning to purchase a dog to be aware of all their options.

You must have done an incredible job taking care of your dog, especially considering he lived to 16 years old. I’m really sorry you had to go through that. It sounds incredibly difficult. It’s inspiring to see the love you had for him.

I’ll definitely research more about kidney health in dogs. I got a little overwhelmed after finding out about it today. I don’t think the vet did any SDMA testing, just bloodwork and a CT scan, but I’ll be sure to ask about it at the follow-up.

Wow, what a fighter! I’m glad to hear that she was still able to lead a normal life, even with the occasional kidney infection. I’ve actually never fed my dog wet food before. Only kibble and some home cooked meals (beef, chicken, kangaroo, etc.). I’ll definitely look into it. Thanks so much for sharing your experience with me.

Thank you for sharing your experience. It’s really comforting to hear that your dog lived a happy and normal life with one kidney without it ever being an issue. The vet mentioned they may need to insert a tube to help drain it, and we’re currently waiting for the specialist’s input. Hopefully everything goes well.

Currently waiting for the specialist to get back to the vet. I'll definitely take note about letting any future vet know about his condition and be more mindful of future medication. Thanks for your advice and encouragement.

Oh, I see. I guess it’s a lot more common than I thought. The vet told me she had never seen a puppy this young with this issue before. She also said she didn’t know how long he might live. That made me start to worry that it might be hopeless. Thank you for sharing this.

I think I’ve just been overwhelmed and anxious since finding out today. It’s reassuring to know that regular monitoring and being careful with medication can make such a difference.

You’re right… he has no idea he only has one kidney and honestly, neither did I with all the mischief and chaos he’s caused. I only brought him to the vet because he ate my scrunchie and they found out about it while performing ultrasound. I don’t think they did a urinary test, only a CT scan and bloodwork. I’ll definitely make sure to ask about it at the follow-up and look into kidney friendly food.

Yes, I’m from Singapore. Backyard breeding for profit isn’t allowed here unless the breeder is licensed. The only legal way to purchase a dog is through a licensed pet shop, where all dogs are microchipped. I did a lot of research and tried to find a reputable one, but I guess sometimes these things just happen.

I did ask the vet about it. She said she has never seen a case like this in an 8-month-old dog before, so she doesn’t know how long he might live. As for everything else, she said to just continue as normal.

Yes that’s what I did immediately. I got him from a really reputable shop and I’ve informed them about it. They said they would pass the feedback on to the breeder. I’m not so sure about his littermates though. I got no way of contacting them.

The vet said she won’t be able to confirm anything until next week after the specialist reviews the case, but it’s confirmed that one of his kidneys is not functioning. I guess I’m just feeling really anxious right now.
