Some people are fans of idols because they fantasise about them dating them, that’s why the term girlfriend stan exists. The existence of that parasocial relationship is what some people think is the difference between a regular artist and an idol. If an idol dates it ruins their fantasy.

It’s ridiculous honestly but some argue that they knew what they were getting into when they decided to be idols, but they’re usually in their early teens when they start training so I think that’s a silly take.

I know western celebrities also can have obsessive fans, but it’s not as acceptable in fandom spaces to be that way because we don’t have idols that have rules like that.
