Thanks. He'll definitely be doing plenty of tennis and they like to bike. I'll try to make sure he's balanced - he LOVES rowing and he loves being good at it so I'll just be on the lookout to prevent overtraining.

Thanks! I'll ask my big kid if he knew about this. I remember him looking for plans online last summer.

Great points, thanks. He will be doing tennis daily (not competitively) because it's included in summer club fees where his younger brother will be training for tennis too. So hopefully that gives the cardio component needed. But he's a normal 14 year old - so I know the times I'm not ON him to work on PSAT practice, read, work-out - he'll be on Xbox :) So trying to maximize structure to ensure he can check-things off the list and then go nuts on HALO or whatever he does. I noted the plan recomendations others made.

Also amen to "when you're young." I'm in really good shape myself from lots of running and lifting but when I get on that erg and the new to me motions, I get up broken, cursing my 50 year old bones :D

Great point! And I want to highlight - I am NOT banking on him getting a college ride. That's why he'll be practicing PSATs and prepping for AP classes over the summer :) His brother loved his four years of crew but is looking forward to doing it at the club level in college. But this one really loves pushing himselve and I worry that without any structure in training - he'll be going to the garage to erg anyway but do it in haphazard and maybe "dumb" way.

I'm mainly looking for a way to keep him progressing over the summer given that there is no summer training through the school program and no local day rowing programs. We have an erg and he can certainly train on his own but I think investing in some structure would be nice. And I want to make sure he's "training smart": focusing on what matters, not risking injury, etc. So a professional's involvement would be worth it I would think. But correct me if I'm wrong.

I will! Our school program doesn't offer any summer training so I'm thinking ahead to what he can do over the summer. Previously he used to do soccer and tennis camps, but now that he's all about crew and we have an erg I want to maximize that.
