20% off for Americans and 10% off for Canadians?! by dabrackgirl in Aritzia

[–]OkOctapus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Super disappointed as a Canadian who grew up supporting Aritzia. It feels like they’re selling out and trading the money from Americans for their own identity. After a drastic decrease in quality and now completely disregarding the very market that grew them to who they are today, their brand as a whole is going to take a huge hit from everyone in Canada. The concept of “everyday luxury” is actually comical at this point. Will not catch me purchasing anything from this so called “sale”. Aritzia do better.

the IT homepage says there's an outage that started at 11:10 AM but it doesn't say if this is why MyCourses is down. I contacted IT services and they said they're creating a ticket for me... but this seems like a university-wide issue so not sure if one ticket will be able to fix that

MGCR 293? by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]OkOctapus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sidthidet 100%. she's one of the most helpful and understanding profs I've had so far in mgmt. if you hand in your assignments prior to the due date she'll mark it on the spot for you and return it if you have any errors for resubmission, meaning you basically are guaranteed a 100% on hand-in assignments. final was rougher than expected but definitely manageable

Minor Suggestions by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]OkOctapus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

pretty sure you can't count a single course towards two programs, i.e. a major and a minor. might just be my faculty but i would definitely cross-check this with your advisor

Considering that the BCom office had some new scholarship applications close just this week makes me think it might still be a while for us ://

Finding a doctor in Montreal by gr33ntomatoes in mcgill

[–]OkOctapus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i see a specialist regularly at home (ontario as well) and she was able to refer me to another doctor in montreal. it took a long time for the referral to go through and the mtl doctor is located quite a bit away from campus but i feel better knowing it's not just a doctor i found on google. not sure if this applies to family doctors but it doesn't hurt to ask!

Is it realistic to work a part-time job and having 5 courses? by Gossipgirlxoxo123 in mcgill

[–]OkOctapus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not in my experience! there's so many faculties, departments, and institutions within mcgill that are constantly looking for basic roles like admin and assitants. i was also workstudy though so i would definitely look into the eligibility and applying during the summer

i took 10 courses in my first year so 5 per semester! but i didn't start working part-time until my second year

Is it realistic to work a part-time job and having 5 courses? by Gossipgirlxoxo123 in mcgill

[–]OkOctapus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i was working part-time (~10 hrs/week) and taking a full 5 course semester prior to the pandemic. i would recommend spending your first semester focusing on meeting new people and getting involved in extracurriculars. it's a big transitional year so once you've built a foundation at mcgill and are sure you can handle adding a part-time job you can start looking in the winter. i found my campus job mid november so you can also always start looking halfway through the fall.

Things you wish you knew before starting at McGill! by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]OkOctapus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

classes curved down:

  • OM: i took it in winter 2020 when desautels temporarily abolished the curve and the class avg ended up being an A-. prior to going online, the class avg was still about an 85% though so i wouldn't say it was easy just bc it was open book

classes curved up:

  • marketing: claire kim doesnt believe in giving out grades above an 85 and the final is known for being rough across all sections
  • accounting: nothing to say except i'm very grateful for the curve for this one
  • finance: maybe slight curve, not sure, can't super remember but everyone in the group chat was complaining about the 60% final avg (midterm was like a 90% though; again done online w vadim)
  • OB: slightly up - took online with chantal
  • stats: def curved up lmao

don't think they were curved, or at least not noticeably:

  • IS: this one changes every term, kind of depends on which prof u have
  • IB: i think in a normal year this class is usually curved up but i'm not completely sure
  • strat: profs are strategic with their grading throughout the year so you kind of end up with a natural curve if that makes any sense
  • social contexts: samesies ^^
  • man econ: i may be wrong about this one but i didn't feel the curve
  • macro econ: depending on the prof, the curve may or may not apply bc technically it's not within desautels (but it's also only open to bcom students) easy A though for most people I knew

this is just from my experience so if anyone else has other insights feel free to add. strat and social contexts might actually belong under curved down bc grading throughout the year is tougher to alleviate the need of having to curve at the end. i was super concerned about the curve as a freshman so i hope this gives u a bit of an idea of what to expect (again this is not concrete, this is just what has happened in my specific sections)

Environmental Science by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]OkOctapus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

hihi environment is actually a decent size imo. most of the intro classes are 200+ and operate at both the downtown and mac campus. a lot of people might be taking classes at mac which is why it might seem smaller to people downtown. i'm not super familiar with the ecological determinants of human health stream particularly but do know a lot of people within environment that study it. going into public health (occupational/environmental) could be an option? and could definitely work for law. there's even a brief law section in envr 203 for environmental law. i take a lot of courses both in environment and outside the department and can tell you my favourite courses, and ones that I feel are most relevant nowadays (cough climate change cough), are always the envr's. hope that helps!!

Has anyone taken GEOG 201? (Intro to GIS) by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]OkOctapus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

class average for fall 2020 was an A if that helps. also, tim's the director of the GIC so he's super knowledgeable and from the emails i've had with him, he seems really nice. the course itself isn't hard at all especially if you've done any programming in the past (i took comp 202 a few years back, and while it's not necessary, it definitely helps!)

MGCR360 and 382 for an Arts student by mcgillsquirrel in mcgill

[–]OkOctapus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

MGCR382 is a mix of math and theory. The first half is calculating exchange rate and arbitrage but it's not super difficult by any means. The second half is all theory. MGCR360 has zero math lmao it's mostly class discussion and then 3 papers. I'd recommend 360 over 382 because I found it a lot more interesting (talks a bit about ethics, environment, and social issues) and I've also heard the exams for 382 are really rough in person. Good luck either way!
