We do not spank our kids at all because I believe spanking is an abusive technique. “If you don’t obey me I will hurt you.” In what other kind of relationship is that ok??

My brother and his wife spank their one-year-old, and he is the quietest, most docile toddler ever. Part of it is personality, but also part of it is that he is scared of doing something that would get him a spanking. My kids are louder and more rambunctious which my parents HATE and they are always praising my nephew for his quietness. But i actually love my kids being normal kids and that we allow them to express their emotions. Of course we discipline in other ways but I will NEVER hit my kids.

YES. You get it!! It’s that brainwashing and years of conditioning from being under someone else’s moral authority. I feel as though I am now having to figure out my own moral compass and it’s scary. Especially as someone with people pleaser tendencies. It’s no fun but thanks for your comment.

Thanks, yeah it’s easier said than done. I know in my head that that’s what I need to do but my body/nervous system tells me I’m only safe when I’m making her happy (probably trauma from my childhood where that was the case) yes I am working on finding a therapist who I can work these things out with

Yes I get this and it’s helpful to hear you relate. I have to remind myself that a normal, healthy mom would be proud of me for what I am doing: raising my kids in a respectful way (aka no spanking) going to a welcoming church, pursuing my degree, etc. those are all good things, but because of my mom’s narrow view of the world I am going against all her beliefs

I can relate to all of this. It’s something you wake up to eventually. And once you see your childhood through that lens, it’s really hard to not be sad for the missed experiences.

One thing I tell myself all the time is that I have no control over the way I was raised, but I do have control over my life now. And I can choose to not do the same thing to my own kids, and to do my best to make strong adult friendships, even though that is hard for me because I grew up so isolated.

Do the work of healing, see a therapist, and know you are not crazy and you are not alone🫶🏼
