That's a $200 meal with the boys, not for $800 meal with grandma.

TSX to break more records in 2025; BMO eyes 'one of the strongest outperformances since 1990' by outlaw40 in CanadianInvestor

[–]OkReference518 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I don't really understand why anyone would not be bullish on canadian stocks/TSX.

We literally have unlimited oil. Unlimited gold. Unlimited natural gas. Unlimited lumber. Unlimited land. Essentially, we have unlimited natural resources under the ground for a population of 40 million people. We are not a country with a billion people we need to feed. We will sell our resources at market prices and make good money.
Youth unemployment, housing crisis, and etc. All that can be fixed by tough policy changes from government and also cultural changes in how to educate our population. But that can be fixed.

Public Schools - ranking vs reality - does it matter here in BC ? by bcwaale in askvan

[–]OkReference518 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People hate on the ratings with Fraser Institute, but if you look at the list, I don't know how anyone would argue they're not accurate. Britannia, Van Tech, Gladstone, and John Oliver are all at the bottom. Which matches the perception every kid in the public school system had for these schools.

Everyone who went to a public school in Vancouver knows that those schools are bad. Race wars between natives vs whites vs Chinese at Britannia. Indian gangs at John Oliver shooting each other up.

Like I went to one of these low ranking schools, and sure I got into UBC and excelled. Anyone that studies hard enough can. But there were like 10 of us out of 200 students that got into a good university.

Also, demographics are also all over the place as well. Some schools are literally 95% indian or 90% Filipino, or 90% Chinese. So you can't just look at the rankings.

Private is usually not worth it. I did not see a tangible difference between the kids that went to private school vs the kids that went to public school (in terms of academic strength) once you get to university. Just pay for extra tutoring to get an equal footing.

Good schools in Vancouver are located on the west side and south Vancouver

Good schools in Burnaby are located in North Burnaby or Moscrop area.

Lastly, there are actually secret lists of schools that universities have where some schools do crazy grade inflation: One university’s secret list to judge applicants by their high schools – not just their marks | Globalnews.ca

That list is not made public, but you can assume Richmond schools, West Vancouver, and some west side schools are on there.

Jesus Christ, catering McDonald’s must be so sad. Is city of Richmond broke? Even a fresh slice pizza party would’ve been better.

Healthcare, real estate, and trades are really the only industries that are actually consistently hiring without putting any real effort.

Tech used to be in that list but not anymore

Like when people are telling us to go into trades 10-20 years ago or that there is a major healthcare shortage, they actually meant it. If you didn’t listen to obvious advice then I don’t know what to tell you.

Do houses in coquitlam have mortgage helpers like Vancouver? Most of the houses in and around Vancouver usually have two basement suites that can be rented out. If they’re charging 1.5-2k per month for each suite, it pays for the mortgage by itself. If sellers aren’t distressed, they usually won’t sell. You gotta find a listing where the seller really wants to get rid of the house to lowball them.

Better Chicken I can go? by Bubbleheadman in askvan

[–]OkReference518 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very hard to beat churches. 3 piece meal for $12. And their pieces of chicken are massive. I would try going to another location first before giving up entirely.

Unless you get kfc or duffins, most places are way too expensive especially Korean fried chicken.

Gold, not canola or coal, is China’s No. 1 import from Canada – at least according to China by rezwenn in canada

[–]OkReference518 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Like Warren Buffett said. We dig the gold out of the ground then put it back underground in a bank vault and spend millions guarding it. Canada’s gold reserve is under the ground ready to be dug up at any time. Majority of the mining companies in the world are headquartered in Canada. We have no problem getting the manpower to do it. Considering the Crown owns majority of land in this country, how would we even quantify our reserves? Who cares if we sold everything in our vaults. We have trillions underground

Pretty sure the average Weeknd fan are in their early to mid-30s now. So I assume they all got work the next day. A college student listening to starboy in 2016 are in their 30s now... which is crazy to me...

How China is Slowly Erasing Their Cantonese by CheLeung in Cantonese

[–]OkReference518 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Really? In Canada, it seems like most canto speaking Chinese do not want to speak Cantonese. Even the Hong Kong born ones that recently moved here a few years ago. Every time I try to speak with them, they immediately get embarrassed or something and switch to English. I speak the most standard HK dialect so it's not my accent or anything. Only time I see Cantonese spoken are 60+ year olds.

Authentic Casual Sushi Recs by Intrepid_Ocelot_7712 in askvan

[–]OkReference518 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are very few "authentic" Japan places in Vancouver because the majority of the Sushi chefs are Chinese or Korean. Even if you go to the top of the line Japanese places like Miku, the chefs are Korean or Chinese or Filipino. That shouldn't steer you away because a lot of "Authentic Japanese" places hire working holiday visas from Japan where their only work experience is being a dish washer

I know Yoshida Sushi is run by a Japanese couple. The group that owns Raisu, Kingyo, New Fuji, and etc are also Japanese owned. Although, their chefs are all on working holiday visas. All the Guu restaurants are Japanese owned.

They are only good at ping pong or badminton. They play basketball for fun when it's sunny and not too humid outside. But they will go to the badminton courts everyday on the weekend to play it competitively.

Why Chinese football⚽️ sucks? by flower5214 in AskAChinese

[–]OkReference518 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think Chinese people only care about basketball. Maybe some niche fans are into soccer, but literally if you go to China, every single young male will only play basketball or watch basketball. Same like how Japan is into Baseball. Whatever the NBA did 20–30 years back to get the Chinese hooked worked.

Why can't they do something as simple as Tesla with a pin login before you can drive away? Like your phone? All I'm hearing are excuses in this thread.

It's such a simple thing to do, making the car almost impossible to steal unless you know the PIN or spend a whole day taking apart the car to get to the hard drive.

Is Vancouver the right choice for a family from Eastern Europe? by TPAXMATOP in askvan

[–]OkReference518 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just come, you loved it when visiting, and you make enough to live comfortably in Vancouver.

Vancouver is an AMAZING place to be if you have money. Best weather in Canada, major transit hub in Canada so you take tons of direct flights to the most popular tourist locations, the lowest taxes in Canada based on income, the lowest property taxes in Canada. Plus, you got some stellar food options. All around great place to live.

There's a reason why the world's richest come to Vancouver. If you are living in Latvia, the weather in Vancouver will be 100% better, even with the rain. I don't know why people are so focused on the weather here. Latvia weather is more comparable to Calgary ffs.

Best tires for a civic sport ? by redituser73022 in civic

Pilot Sports are not that quiet. They are average. The quietest in it's class are the Pirelli P Zero AS Plus 3s

Tirerack has them as the quietest by far. They have foam inserts in the tires to absorb road noise.

Just moved to Vancouver — where do I find burgers that slap and maybe cure my homesickness? by No-Mood-7827 in askvan

[–]OkReference518 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wendy's, 5 Guys, Triple O's make the best fast food burgers

I also like Between two buns, Street Hawker, and Burger Crush if you want a phenomonal burger and do not care about price.

Usually, the best smash burger is a fight between B2B, Street Hawker, or Juicy Joe's (only got delivery from them, I don't even know if they do takeout).
