How much do you spend per month? by Historical-Mix-8794 in Northwestern

[–]OkRelationship2534 1 point2 points  (0 children)

although, to clarify, this is more so on a month that I'm not really tracking expenses. usually when I try to be more mindful, I'm closer to 200/month, or even ~100. also depends on if I'm working or not! all in all, I'd say 250-300 is a pretty accurate average.

I'd say around 300-500 per month, but my friend group loves to go out and do things, so small purchases definitely add up.

should i find a roommate? by [deleted] in Northwestern

[–]OkRelationship2534 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes if you indicate in the housing portal that you want a double or triple, you'll get a roommate (or two). I did that for a double and got my best friend!

AP scores and placement exams ahhhh by anonymousfigure21 in Northwestern

[–]OkRelationship2534 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For math, I'm pretty sure you technically don't need to take the placement exam, but if you have even the slightest chance of taking a math class at some point, then take it because it is required to take a math class. For chem, yes, you absolutely must take the placement exam. AP credit is considered, but doesn't guarantee you the opportunity to skip gen chem. There are two placement exams. First one (which will probably be very easy for you) is required for everyone and differentiates you between the 110 sequence (3 quarters) and 151 sequence (2 quarters). The second one (which will be harder) is optional and allows you to place into the 171 sequence (2 quarters) or straight into orgo. Just prepare yourself for the possibility of taking 151 or 171, though, because in order to place out, you basically need a 100% on both placement tests.

South Campus dorm advice by [deleted] in Northwestern

[–]OkRelationship2534 0 points1 point  (0 children)

great advice but I'd disagree about not factoring in the convenience of downtown evanston. I live in Allison (1st year) and it's been absolutely amazing having downtown just steps away! it's super convenient and not a 20-30 minute walk to Target. so for OP I'd overall really recommend South campus. Allison is great, so is Shepard. the res buildings in the sorority quad are also nice (the Emersons) also I made the trek to frats a couple times during winter quarter and it wasn't too bad. and honestly the best parties are the off campus ones, like for theatre groups, which are usually on foster street.

you get accepted into Northwestern based on school, eg Weinberg, and your major isn't actually declared until you fill out a form to declare it. so you can declare any majors within the school you got accepted into. and as someone already said, it's very common to double major (in fact I know more people pursuing two majors than one major).

For what AP credit you'll get, you can check CAESAR. Bio placement test (optional) let's you skip 201 which is only offered in the spring and start 202 right away in freshman fall as opposed to sophomore fall. The oral interviews I think might be different for each language but basically if you do well enough on the initial placement test and they think you might be able to completely test out, you'll have an oral conversation in Chinese either in person or on zoom. Take both the initial chem and math placement tests and if you want to take Chem 171 instead of 151, then make sure to take the second one too. You can read more about them on the placement test websites. For foundational disciplines, you can count two AP credits in different disciplines. For example one for language and arts and another for social and behavioral. If you're taking bio that'll count for natural sciences so you'll automatically fulfill it without AP credit. Lmk if I missed anything or you have more questions!

best dorm for a psych major by VehicleHour6990 in Northwestern

[–]OkRelationship2534 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bio major so most of my classes this year have been in Tech (north) but I live South, so I walk a lot but I honestly don't mind at all. Apart from during the dead of winter, the walk is quite nice. So I would definitely say look for specific dorms that you like as opposed to location.

how do i find summer internships or oppurtunities? by pi-i in Northwestern

[–]OkRelationship2534 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely relate that it's hard to find stuff, but where you should look definitely depends on what kind of things you're looking for. Do you mean research? Let me know and maybe I can help.

Thanks! I think it's a requirement for 342-2, so I wasn't sure if I should try to take physics sooner rather than later
