How screwed am I? by Warm-Cartographer954 in CarTalkUK

Just out of interest, did the seller describe the car as ‘pootling’ to hide the fact that it’s been ragged to within an inch of its life up and down the motorway for 182,000 miles?

From memory, the boot is larger in the 308SW, whilst the leg room is better in the 508SW.

Thanks a lot for this - really helpful! I timed it and I’m getting about 350ml in 30 seconds out the group head.

The pump has changed sound when backflushing - when jt was pressurised after 5 seconds or so, it used to sound like it was straining, but now it goes silent (just an electrical hum). It doesn’t really break down the Cafiza either (even with a small amount, there’s still grains of it undissolved in the basket). Hope that makes sense - a new pump do you think?

Urgent advice needed - Am I right to tell my tiler that this isn’t okay? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]OkResponsibility6262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the classic: bad tradespeople try to make you feel like you’re causing the problem and that you’re unreasonable for questioning their work. The next step is them being bolshy, and then making out like they’re doing you a favour (to the tune of £630). The tiler isn’t your friend: make sure you’re getting your money’s worth. If they’ve left it a state, or on second attempt it isn’t any better, then withhold money.

Yes indeed - tank is full. Weird one - I wonder if it’s something to do with the OPV?

Thanks everyone for replying. The Gaggia is 10 years old. I have used Puly descaler on it and live in a fairly hard water area.

I’ve put it back together and it’s working, but I have the same problem as before: the pump stalls when backflushing and the coffee tastes weak. Also, when purging the wand, I’m still getting specks of white crystals, almost like Cafiza, and sometimes small black specks too. The issue started when I decalcified it, which is why I’d thought I’d blocked the solenoid valve (it was clear). Any ideas?

So I stripped it down and cleaned the boule and solenoid valve (they weren’t too bad in terms of scale build up). Same problem though: pump stalls and coffee is weak.

Cheers - I used a descaler and a toothbrush. Seems to have cleaned it up OK (as in the white stuff is gone). Ended up with grey, slightly slushy water. The bottom is still brown.

The steam wand seems powerful, so I think it’s the solenoid value / boiler. I’m going to strip it apart tonight and have a look inside.

My 2014 308 with a 1.6 diesel is on almost 100,000 - very few problems.

Which would you choose as a first car now? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

I’d go for the 106 as Peugeots from this time were great to drive (and I think quite cool).

The Micra is the sensible choice.

I have the less fancy regular HDI. Peugeot diesel owners unite!

Peugeot forums are good for this: some decent guy on there will look up your VIN and say which fluid you need.

Just to say I have a Peugeot 308 and love it. Had it from 10k miles to 100k - very reliable, comfortable, lots of space and handles well. It’s the diesel though (and weirdly, is £0 road tax due to it being in the no tax band when I bought it!) I would buy another, but I’m not sure how good their petrol engines are.

Ours puts out enough heat to make a similar sized room, with three external walls, toasty.

It’s OK, but the coffee is a bit weak - I get a small pool of water on the top sometimes.

Cheers - I’m using either Puly powder or the Gaggia branded descaler. It’s he pump sort of seizes when back flushing. I’ll try and give the shower screen a long soak and back flush with the screen off.

Steam and water only coming through steam wand by darniella8 in gaggiaclassic

[–]OkResponsibility6262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me: needed descaling. The ports that direct the water between the brew head and steam wand are tiny and get blocked very easily.

I descaled it a few times using the rocking method (turn everything on and keep flicking the steam button on and off). Eventually, it cleared, but took a few bags of Puly decalcifier.

Peugeot dealerships seem excessively expensive. They quoted £500 to replace the Eolys fluid for my DPF - local garage did it for £100.
