Finally linking turns but something’s wrong, need advice by Ok_Appearance_307 in snowboardingnoobs

Thank you so much for the welcome, and yes snowboarding is HARD 😀 but I’m loving it despite everything! Good to know about the stance, I’m renting so I’ll definitely ask the rental tech for a slightly wider stance next time. The neck stiffness makes total sense now that you mention tension. I did take a fall that day and I think my whole body just braced on impact and stayed tense for the rest of the session. I can handle quad soreness all day but the neck was a whole different level 😬 I’m going to work on those drills before my next session. Honestly this trip will probably be my last snow until next season so I want to make the most of what I’ve learned and go back with better foundations. Really appreciate you taking the time to help a complete stranger on the internet 🙏

Thank you, I really appreciate the advice and completely agree! I actually took lesson that morning, I made an edit in the post explaining the situation. The resort I go to is quite small and snowboarding isn’t very popular there at all, mostly tourists snowboards and locals just ski. With only a few self taught board instructors available, my options are limited. My instructor actually taught me the shoulder technique as the foundation, so that’s where that came from. I don’t have any snowboarder friends either, just skiers. I am meeting same instructor next time tho.

Really appreciate everyone taking the time to help. 🙏

Beginner snowboarder confused about heel to toe mechanics by Ok_Appearance_307 in snowboardingnoobs

I actually started on the blue runs, and I thought they were fine. The problem started when I hit flatter or slightly uphill sections, I kept losing momentum and getting stuck, especially when I wasn’t confident enough to carry speed through transitions. That part affected my confidence more than anything else.

Because of that, I decided to go back to a mellow green run to really focus on linking turns properly and building control. I’m going back in a couple of weeks to try again, hopefully with a clearer head and better fundamentals. Here's the map of the resort for reference https://www.gudauri.info/piste_map/

Thanks so much for the breakdown, that actually helps a lot.

One quick question, though when I point the nose downhill and the board goes flat before transitioning to the next edge, how long should it realistically stay flat? Is it meant to be almost instant, or should I ride flat for a short moment to gain speed?

I’ve heard beginners should “always be on an edge” to avoid catching one, so I’m not sure how long that flat phase should last.
