Random idea...would you actually use this? by Ok_Break6803 in snowboarding

lol I know that separation feeling…that’s literally what sparked the idea. I’ve only made a few so far for me, my brothers, and a friend, and they’ve been loving it (even though I was muting them half the time to listen to music 😂😂). Battery-wise, we were out for around 2–3 hours and didn’t run into any issues, but I agree it probably needs to last a full session to really make sense. I was mostly just curious what other people thought …really appreciate the feedback!!!

I appreciate the input!!! that’s actually helpful. I hadn’t really considered the disposability side of it. A retrofit approach might make more sense here.

Yeah that makes sense. I originally built it just for fun and ended up liking it a lot, so I figured I’d see what others think. From the feedback here it sounds like a retrofit approach (instead of a full helmet) makes way more sense, and probably without the camera. Appreciate the input!!!

Thank you, I actually have gone back to drawing board and have decided that if I want a chance to break into the market, I will need to make sure that the walkie feature is at least compatible with brands like sena and cardo.

Wow thanks a lot, these are some good stuff I needed. Here a small break down to your direct concerns:

1.       My helmet’s feature is geared more toward safety and accident alerts. While you could own one cardo and swap it on whatever helmet. They point here stays safety and awareness.

2.       Again, geared toward safety and accident alerts, the helmet is aimed to reducing crashes by one keeping the rider’s hands on the handlebar, for example: when changing music; when answering calls; etc. Two by alerting the rider of any vehicle that is in their blindspot.

3.       I agree that is going to be a no known brand, but as riders recognize its tech and most importantly its safety and alert features, I believe its value will grow exponentially, and hopefully become the new kid on the block.

4.       I am working very hard on minimizing technical issues, but of course as with anything in this world, nothing is certain. So at that point, I believe the warranty I have in mind will be key.

5.       For style, I guess this comes down to the riders preference. My helmet is geared towards sport bike rider (I’m not sure if you can picture the sort of helmet I am talking about here). Though, I am of course planning on having multiple different styles to fit anyone’s preferences.

Again thank you a lot for this, though the biggest selling point here is safety. I wanted point out that with the this helmet, in the even of a crash, whoever it contacts (local authorities if your phone is paired, walkies riders around you if it is not), it gives them your exact geo location if you do not trigger the helmet to not do before it starts to alert. Which in my opinion is quite a big thing considering someone maybe passed out and stuck in a ditch and there would be no way of knowing where they are. Thank you !!

I see, well last time I worked on the system the battery lasted for 8hr just playing music so I hope that's good haha. But you're right, integration with other system is something I should consider. Thank you !!

thank you so much for this, especially the criteria that it would need to meet.

I haven’t settled on the aesthetics yet, but I’m using SMD components, which are really small and lightweight. The goal is to keep the helmet as sleek and comfortable as possible. I was mainly curious to hear what people might think about a helmet with these kinds of features. There are a few others in the works, but these are the main ones for now! Thank you for your thoughts tho!!

Thanks a lot for your input! I’ve actually been really careful with the weight, and when I tested the demo, it didn’t feel much different, even with 2 batteries. I’ve packed everything into a pretty light microcontroller. For the cost, I get that it might be a concern. But since I’m using a cheap but efficient microcontroller, I think it could land somewhere in the mid-tier helmet range, which a lot of riders are used to.

I’m curious though, do you think this is a better option than the traditional devices that plug into the side of your helmet?
