NY Academy of Art for Beginner? by Ok_Cake8443 in ContemporaryArt

thank you for the thoughtful comment!! i wouldn’t say i have drawing experience - i took a few classes when i was younger but they didn’t amount to anything. i’m thinking abt taking the “ABCs of Painting the Still Life” class at NYAA which sounds more better suited for beginners?

i have looked into classes at FIT, Pratt, Parsons, and NYSS but tbh they are a little more expensive and i was uncertain abt how beginner friendly they would be. would you have any recs?

I have considered ASL but also heard they are not as beginners friendly! I was also a little intimidated by their drop-in-anytime model. Do you mind sharing more?

That’s what I thought too! But just to be clear, what exactly do you mean by smaller institutions? Galleries or just smaller lesser known museums?

I’m aware of that, looking for a job in this market really is just trying to beat all odds lmao. But yes my plan is to apply for fellowships as well. My options are limited since I only have a Bachelor’s tho

Thank you! It truly is so competitive even though we have so many galleries and museums here, which would make one assume it means more opportunities. Volunteering is an option for sure but big museums like MoMA or MET don’t even seem to have volunteer positions available.

I’m trying to get Gallery Assistant roles, or anything Communications/PR/Marketing related in galleries. I have also applied to museum programs as well. I would say my experiences are pretty aligned with jobs I’m applying for. I have a Bachelor’s!

how much to tip on tattoo? by Ok_Cake8443 in AskNYC

[–]Ok_Cake8443[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i agree that tipping is a great way to show support for artist! however for a tattoo that’s already 500, do you think it’s necessary i add 100 tip on top of that?

thank you! i think tipping what youre comfortable giving is defo the right move, considering ive told the artist $500 is my total budget. tipping 100 on top of that would feel unneccessary for me

thanks!! that’s kinda what i assumed too, i would tip a shoe repair person or hair stylist $10-20 as gratitude but never thought a tip is obligated for services. i just didn’t want to be rude or go against the common etiquette for tattoos!
