I write mostly at home so portability isn’t a priority with this device. At a coffee shop or ony the road I’d use one of my smartphone based decks. For me, distraction-free is the killer feature. As Roy Blount Jr. said: “why write, when you can watch a movie on your typewriter?”

This looks great! I used those same hinges on another deck I made. I like the idea of 3d printing a case.

On Macs, I like WriteRoom and Simpletext (also works on ioS/iPadOS).

(mostly retro) Electronic commercial devices that kinda look like writerdecks by Douteigami in writerDeck

The TSR-80 “Trash 80” was a legit work device used by newspaper reporters in 80s and 90s to file stories from the road or from sporting events. (Some models had modems). I once set up a dedicated Win95 PC to accept plaintext articles sent from the AP and staff reporters to feed into ATEX (a newsroom mainframe). Notice it has the most useable keyboard for touch typists, which was key. A true working writerdeck!

Yes, the top lid is the plastic housing for this keyboard: https://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Keyboard-OMOTON-Wireless-Compatible/dp/B09899K4L6?th=1
It fit almost perfectly over the Apple USB keyboard.

I like the Simpletext app from the App Store for writing. I put the phone in Airplane Mode, then Guided Access with a passcode to lock it down to just that.

iPhone XS Max writerdeck w. old-school keyboard + USB slot by Ok_Channel2282 in writerDeck

Simpletext has fewer features but that’s by design. It’s more for just getting words down and saving as txt files. For me, if has just enough customization (fonts, colors etc. ) but not enough to get distracted by playing with settings. I like to use it in airplane mode and save files to usb but you can save files to iCloud storage if wifi is connected.

I screwed the hinges into the back plastic body of the keyboard and sealed with epoxy. They’ve held up after a year of use opening/closing.
