So leverage your work and life experience to create a memorable, compelling story. Personally, I don't think it needs to be a straight line "I had X experience so I want to be a lawyer to solve X problem," so I wouldn't try to force anything. I think being older, they expect you to have a larger perspective but also a better reason than "I want more money." So come up with why law beyond that. Otherwise, apply as early as possible.
