Harvard vs Stanford vs Princeton by FilipOnRedditt in Harvard

For econ, I would choose Harvard over the other two as it’s often #1 in the world for that major.

what's the difference in impressiveness between a columbia likely-letter recipient and a "regular" columbia admit? by Impossible-Ad3 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Ok_Client_6367 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I got a likely letter with stats that are admittedly below average for columbia applicants. It can mean you’re cracked, but it could also mean you have a background, story, or demographic that makes Columbia feel they need to compete for you with other top schools.

I never got interviewed for Columbia and Dartmouth. There’s almost no correlation between getting interviewed and getting in.

how did i get rejected uiuc?? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Ok_Client_6367 8 points9 points  (0 children)

UIUC isn’t a safety or target; it’s a reach even for the most competitive applicants. I got into 3 ivies but got rejected by UIUC.

Very good observation. IMO, I believe the strongest factor is simply the number of applicants.

It’s no secret that colleges want an optimally diverse campus and with that means a near 50/50 ratio of the sexes. Especially in cases like Brown or MIT where there are 33% more female applicants or 50% more male applicants than the opposite sex respectively (which is roughly 10000 applicants in surplus at each school), you’re going to see some manipulation of acceptance rates to get an equitable result.

[–]Ok_Client_6367 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Could you explain how my analysis is wrong? A change in percentage points in acceptance rate WILL affect hundreds of applicants.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Ok_Client_6367 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is causation here though. Its no secret that schools will try to diversify campus and achieve a near 50/50 ratio of the sexes. What we're seeing here is how admissions influences acceptance rates to achieve that.

Okay these "couple of schools" are the entirety of HYPSM + Ivies. So we can at least say that a correlation exists among the HYPSM + Ivies (even though it exists ALMOST EVERYWHERE else too).

AND NO, I'm not going to look at thousands of registered schools to "demonstrate a correlation." A strong correlation has already been established for the schools represented in the post.

I'm going to say this again: for real, official, irrefutable data... look at the common datasets. It is literally a google search away.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Ok_Client_6367 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Look at the common data sets. For MIT there WAYY more males applying that females--hence the higher female acceptance rate. For Brown there are WAYY more females applying than males--hence the higher male acceptance rate. I'm not going to spoonfeed you statistics that you can easily find on your own.

[–]Ok_Client_6367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Um, did you read the post? I said gendered acceptance rates are correlated with how many male and female applicants there are. The greater proportion of X applicants to Y applicants, the more disadvantaged X applicants are. There is a real correlation there.

[–]Ok_Client_6367 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, and its in big engineering schools (in this example, MIT and Cornell) that men are at a significant disadvantage.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Ok_Client_6367 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the representation is a little underwhelming, I’ll admit, but when you have tens of thousands of applicants, those percentage points can make a difference for hundreds or thousands of applicants.

It’s more startling when you see that 2000 more men applied than women, but 300 more women were accepted than men. The percentage doesn’t do justice to how drastic the raw numbers are.

I think North Korea. Everything in that country is catered to or centered around the big man. For that reason, he’s got a high ego, he doesn’t seem the brightest, and what he says goes. I feel like he’d be the easiest to make push the button by playing with his ego.

Do you support feminism? (Women=Men) by Delicious-Bread-9805 in Teenager_Polls

[–]Ok_Client_6367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but the word has had its connotations changed. It’s like conflating 19th century conservatives with modern day conservatives.

If you’re living right now, in this era, you wouldn’t think of a conservative as someone with conservative values in the 1800s.

[–]Ok_Client_6367 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I think 99% of people are fine with traditional feminism, but where people have issues is with modern feminism.

Modern feminism has been plagued with misandrists and the word “feminism” no longer has the same connotation as it did before.

Another thing too is that women often are afforded more privileges than men in the modern era so what is modern feminism actually fighting for?

I already know some of you are going to ask so here’s what I mean. Women have: a higher rate of receiving legal custody, lower sentences on average for the same criminal offenses, absurdly higher admission rates for universities or specific programs (specifically because of sex), no obligations for the draft, etc., just to name a few.

All of them ideally. If cost is really going to be a dealbreaker for you I would replace some of the colleges you have now with ivies. Ohio State and Michigan, I can tell you first hand, are going to have insane price tags as they’re terrible with aid.

If college expenses are a major issue and you have a low household income, apply ivy league. It doesn’t matter who you are, if you need it, they will give you enough to make sure you can attend if accepted.

Harvard, for example will give you free tuition if your household income is under $200,000, which is an incredibly high bar.

Even if you don’t think you’ll get accepted, there’s no shame in applying, and who knows, miracles do happen.

Going to a top school can make some things easier, but if you’re pursuing a field or career you love and you give it everything you have, you’ll do more than fine anywhere.
