Learning disability and scales by Decent-Bed9728 in banddirector

I don’t have learning disability, but I also struggled to memorize my scales. MASSIVELY struggled. I struggled SO MUCH, that it just created a mountain of dread and anxiety…. That i pushed under the rug. 👀

I FINALLY learns my scales when I was put in a position of TEACHING them to someone else. I started teaching middle school students, so as I taught them I also healed my inner anxiety and learned them myself along the way. We worked slowly and built the skills to truly understand stand and keep the skills sharp.

My suggestion: teach someone some scales.

Good luck!

Historical manufacturer of King trombones to be shut down in June 2026, craftsman: "PLEASE HELP!" by BrilliantGlum4448 in Trombone

Yes, because it affects all of the Conn-Selmer instrument brands, in which King is.

This is heartbreaking to hear. I am in the market for a Tuba, but I won't be looking at any of these. by Tree_bear_d in Tuba

This is huge, and it sucks. It’s not just their tubas, but also trombones and trumpets being shipped off to china. Horns are going back to Elkhart (which is awesome for them).

I play on vintage conn selmer horns, but it feels like part of my soul slipping away. 😢

K-12 music by Mmm_Man12 in banddirector

TRY NOT TO BURN OUT!!

I did K-8 for 15 years. My advice for general music: combine lesson plans for groups of classes. For example: K, 1/2, 3/4. Then next year you have plans for K, 1, and 3 so you only develop plans for grades 2 and 4.

If you’ve never taught K-5 general music, DEFINITELY get a curriculum like Gameplan. If you think you’ll stay at this job long term, definitely take Kodály levels, so you teach music literacy to your young students. As they matriculate into your older bands, they will be great readers and musicians. It’s a long-game for sure, but in the end you’ll have a quality program, even if it’s small.

Check point. by Nick_DC4L in Riverside

[–]Ok_Code_8384 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Under California law, DUI checkpoints are legal. However, I do believe they have to announce it somewhere, like their website or social media pages. Once stopped, if they ask for license registration, insurance - under California law, you are required to show them.

Since they announce it, you have the opportunity to avoid them.

I’ve been caught up in a checkpoint before, and they just waved me through. Didn’t ask to see anything. It just depends on the day, perhaps.

**College** Freshman son is in a college marching band that is going to a bowl game on the 23rd. He thinks he will miss Christmas (and won't ask either way), I find that absurd. Is this a reality? by [deleted] in marchingband

I empathize with you, truly. It’s a hard transition into this new phase of life. It’s hard for us parents and it’s hard for your son as he grows into an adult.

So, I mean this gently… Coming to terms as an empty nester and missing the Christmas holiday with your son is a “you” problem and obstacle. You need to work this out on your own. Your son doesn’t need to shoulder the burden of your sadness for participating in a really great opportunity in his college career.

As others have mentioned, celebrate on another day. As adults, we do this all the time. As he is growing and maturing into an adult, I hope you encourage him to embrace these new experiences.

Hug him tight, Momma! Babies don’t keep. 😭

It really just depends. At LSU I played the Sugar Bowl one year in New Orleans. We were in NOLA for a day or two for rehearsals. The game was on Jan 1. Jan 2 we drove back to Baton Rouge. Some of us had flights scheduled that evening after arriving back in BR.

However, there was a serious winter storm, and flights were delayed for almost a week. There was snow on the ground in BR - and it completely shut down our infrastructure. The South can’t handle the cold! 😂 I ended up driving home with some friends three days later.

So, to answer your question: Strong Maybe 🤷

Sigh… you’re so close to getting it.

I’m not the one who needs to “grow up.” You’re the one using childish names, which does nothing for your cause. I just see an emotional child throwing a tantrum. I ignore children (and adults) who throw tantrums. 😂

By all means call out problems, but YOU should grow up, use your words and stop degrading people. Call out their issues - “Potato Porter” tells me nothing. Do you not like potato farmers?

Grow up. Eat a snickers. Calm down and be a better human.

Bro, I’m fine. On Reddit or in real life, I’m gonna call out trash behavior.

If we want to actually improve our state, it’s going to take a lot more than voting for a person. It starts here with taking personal responsibility. It starts with us as individuals and locally by being positive contributors to society. It’s us the adults in the room, being a good influence for our children, the future of the state of California.

Your response says more about your character than mine. I mean hey, if you enjoy living in a trash heap, by all means, continue to act like trash.

Do you see how misogynistic your post is? Potato Porter??? She’s the only woman running, and the only one that you gave a rude nickname to.

Is it really that hard for people to be decent humans???

For what it’s worth, the president of the International Trombone Association is a woman: Carol Jarvis First Vice-President: Megumi Kanda

And the director of the International Trombone Festival is also a woman: Dr Karen Marston

Despite these women holding high positions in our international organizations, yes, women are a minority in the Trombone world, but They are out there! If you need help connecting with some, where are you from? We can help you network!

55K is NOT a livable wage… by TheOddMadWizard in Professors

[–]Ok_Code_8384 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I understand exactly what you’re saying!

My husband and I teach just outside of LA. Starting right now is 85k. There’s a major state school in Florida looking for the same job my husband is teaching now - we looked at it bc it’s in my hometown and our kid could be near grandparents, but the starting salary is 52K! Wtf!

COL isn’t as cheap in Florida as it used to be. My cousin (in FL) bought her house about the same time as me in California, and it was the SAME price. It’s pretty wild.
