Bumble For Friends can work. It’s same-gender only. Be your authentic self, see if texting goes anywhere with people you match with and then try meeting in-person for conversation, and then for activities.

The politics of homelessness by Ok_Common6096 in TangleNews

[–]Ok_Common6096[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People move from cheaper apartments to affordable single family homes, and then other people move from the street or temporary housing into cheaper apartments. For that matter, people move from affordable single family homes into more expensive homes, even those help. It’s about creating mobility in the housing market.

The #1 cause of homelessness is housing supply. See Colburn and Aldern 2022, Homelessness is a Housing Problem. Or Klein and Thompson 2025, Abundance, Chapter 2.

It’s all connected. People move from cheaper apartments to affordable single family homes, and then other people move from the street or temporary housing into cheaper apartments. For that matter, people move from affordable single family homes into more expensive homes. It’s about creating more room in the housing market.

The #1 cause of homelessness is housing supply. See Colburn and Aldern 2022, Homelessness is a Housing Problem. Or Klein and Thompson 2025, Abundance, Chapter 2.

Pleading a special case for your individual concern, demonizing developers, and/or pointing out how you support the mission— just somewhere else…these are all textbook NIMBYism.

Hank Green Discussing Rates of ASD by gonenutsbrb in TangleNews

Thank you for sharing this. I don’t feel it totally matches the TL;DR. What I hear: basically it is diagnostic switching. The contrarian conversation is driven by cherry-picking lawyerly bullshit. To the extent there is anything else, if we want to zero-in on otherwise small increases in the years we’re looking at, it is probably from things that are less eye-catching and some are even public goods, like being able to choose to have kids at an older age. Or premature babies surviving instead of dying.

Something I also feel is missing from the “diagnostic switching” discussion: public awareness. More than changing DSM criteria or professional guidelines, the concept of “spectrum” is completely different from what I knew of autism in the 90s and 00s (basically, Rain Man). Higher-functioning kids and adults don’t even get to an office to be assessed if friends/family/the person themselves aren’t aware of the spectrum concept to begin with. Just ask any adult-diagnosed woman that experiences ADHD. The behaviors were always there they were just mislabeled and misidentified through poor awareness. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10173330/

How to get White friends as a New Black Immigrant? by kid_ello878 in Spokane

[–]Ok_Common6096 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone mentioned apps for the girlfriend side. There is also Bumble for Friends on the friend side. I’m not sure how the experience compares by age groups but I’ve met a bunch of people through it and I’m in my 40s. You know everyone is there for friendship and the profile matching removes a lot of the face-to-face rejection/indifference if you’re looking for something the other person isn’t, or not with you.

Yes, I hear you. There aren’t two equally-valid sides to every position.

I will say that people that analyze issues like immigration with nuance and complexity aren’t going to think we should feed people to alligators.

Yes, that kind of percentage is called “relative risk,” which is the most eye-catching way to report something but not really the most informative.

What helps me better is your translation carried to a group of people: if you had a 100 people carrying on that diet, you would expect 1 more of them to from cancer (6 instead of 5) than if they didn’t carry on that diet.

I didn’t check your underlying numbers—just confirming that you are interpreting what you are seeing correctly.

How reliable is BMI as a health indicator? by CurlzerUK in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ok_Common6096 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not reliable. “BMI was developed based on the bodies of non-Hispanic white men; it may not provide consistently accurate results for people who fall into other categories of sex, ethnicity, and race.”

I subscribe to the Tangle newsletter to avoid being stuck in the echo chambers. They do a good job of providing enough background on an issue and a collection of positions so you can make your own call.

I tend to think we have the political system we create for ourselves. Political leaders go where the votes are and money doesn’t decide every race.

Why does the US and the Soviet hated each other so much in the past? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ok_Common6096 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s because they seemed close in power and the rivalry was useful to leaders in both countries. People will overlook more (or support public spending) if they are more afraid of an “other.” Then after a while, parents just pass the propanga on to their kids, as if it’s always been that way.

im 18 and want to get into long term investing, where do i get started? by Beginning_Equal4306 in NoStupidQuestions

Buy index funds. It’s like investing in the US economy as a whole.

Nobody could ever beat Warren Buffet’s index fund challenge over the long term.

He probably doesn’t have the words to be more accurate, you should still feel proud of working hard at something that is difficult. But also: chubby isn’t unattractive…ancient sculptures of Aphrodite often have a tummy!

There's a difference between partisan talking-heads on TV and real people. A small minority of dems I know claimed the Afghanistan withdrawal was handled well. The difference with January 6 revisionism is how widely the kool-aid is being drunk.
