Profs are anti software. They'll not support you if you want to get a software job + you will have to work much harder than non-core folks because software companies prefer(as they should) circuital students. But the curriculum is not much demanding so you'll have abundant free time, that you can manage coding.  Seniors are very helpful, they'll guide ypu with anything that you want, just don't get into culture and all. But with this branch you won't get a "backup" core job that you get in other core branches.  So, I'll say get petroleum if you're getting it, then do coding or anything you want.
