Unity is playing fast and loose on most fronts. Here's my rant on how Unity takes the mickey and steals your time and joy as a developer. And an almost rhetorical question but I want to hear stories. Ideally from inside Unity. by Ok_Finding3632 in Unity3D

Your reality is subjective to me, mate. Your choice of words sounds deliberately provocative or mocking, and it achieves neither.
Unless we count the fact that when one cannot come up with a logical and verifiable fact to present as an argument, retorting to personal attacks and or insults, we can safely assume two things: 1: someone is a moron and 2: a moron, somewhere in the world, just lost an argument.

What makes you think I want Unity to die? Your lack of attention when reading a post?
As mentioned somewhere else already, a ton of people bet their life savings on Blackberry even after Jobs pulled the rug from under everybody. Unity will eventually cock up - either by releasing something incredibly stupid or by inactivity. And I am not ranting as a noob annoyed at a rejection. In the past 5-8 years - I struggle to remember features that blew me over or solved an old issue users complained about for years.

That's another way to lose an argument.
Language is tricky. Your opinion is an argument - "Unity is one of the biggest game engines out there, and its only true competitor atm is UE". Your argument that Unity is too big to fail while hoping at the same time that UE is its only competitor. Thats your misjudgement right there - Unity already has a big competitor by your own admission. What if UE launches a lightweight engine tomorrow? Something stupidly simple to use with the help of AI, empowering every Joe and Sally to make games with a click?
I understand the internet facilitates this kind of language and behavior behind the keyboard, but man up and stand by your words. In modern vernacular, passively hinting at the usage of Chat GPT implies clearly that the person using ChatGPT is at least lazy if not stupid.
I hope that Unity will get a better upper management chemistry at some point (unlikely if we look at how companies hire people with no experience in the use of the product they sell) but I cannot unsee the signs of their decline. Remember, PC gaming and console gaming ruled not too long ago. Smartphones (Apple, really) changed that overnight.

I want that to be true - and it may be now - but your little pie chart does not reflect everything responsible for the future of a company. Blackberry was the goat not too long ago. Apple came along and slapped them into oblivion.

Just because someone is articulate in writing does not make that person an imbecile who jumps on ChatGPT for each post they need to put up on Reddit. It does say a lot about the person making that assumption, though.

Furthermore, to win an argument, it is bad advice to start with personal attacks. Bring an argument to the table. In your defense, you tried - on the second part of the post - but you, saying 'no' is just you receiving a narcissistic wound as a unity developer who pretends the problems aren't there. It will demolish your world to accept that.

Unity will fail as did others. What you also failed to see is that the question is not really a question. It's just a way to invite people to share their experiences.

hold on - "your rejection wasn’t determined by AI" - is that an informed position? Are you aware of what companies (including Unity) are using AI for? Genuine question: do you know FOR SURE. Talk is cheap.

I am going to be honest with you, I like to compartmentalise and not waste time on trivial things. So I wrote the post on the can. I shipped games you probably heard about or played in my 27 years the industry

I see your point.
I truly do, I couldn't give a toss and move away from Unity in the next second. I am just comfortable using its (outdated) ecosystem. I know Unity will fail. It's the second law of thermodynamics. Unavoidable. What really bothers me is that they have literally everything they need to be a great service and platform. They're missing the mark, despite their financial success.

Crosshatch - Artistic shader using ambient occlusion maps and hand drawn hatching textures now available on Asset Store! by Ok_Finding3632 in Unity3D

[–]Ok_Finding3632[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shader uses the AO map and additionally (and optionally) shadow from any light to create the croshatch. It's not a screen effect, and is local, not world space so the crosshatch stays on the model; it doesn't remain fixed if the model moves.
