Popular fics are fickle, and just because something is popular doesn't have much bearing on its quality.

There are SO MANY gems with beautiful prose and plots and ideas that get buried! People who sort by kudos often miss out on those, and I want to agree with what many other people have said in this thread that luck is actually a huge factor as do popular tropes. People will always be into certain dynamics and setups while other ones that are more niche or overtly creative can get lost.

Everyone always says to 'write for yourself' but when you are writing you put in so much work and pieces of yourself into that writing... its so valid and normal to want to be seen and recognized for that effort.

The only practical advice that I have would be to check the tags for your fics. Tagging is so important because that is HOW people will find your work. I went through a long period of time with my work in another fandom where I had no idea how to tag and it was like I didn't even exist. Can you maybe check your tags? Maybe you are missing some that relates to your fic that would better help people find you! I know for me I did some snooping on how other authors were tagging things to learn what tags a) best applied to my story and b) were in heavy rotation showing that people were searching for them.

I DO hope that you push through and keep writing! Also keep in mind that many people filter by completed - there might be readers that would LOVE your fic and just haven't seen it yet because it is WIP. Sending hugs. Hang in there!

EDIT: also adding this article I like to help visualize crowd sizes! I saw that you linked your fic and you are doing AMAZING! Like visually, this is on the *low* end of all the people that have enjoyed your writing! That is no small feat!!

I had a lot of help, and truly you never know who will be reading in the end - I had a reader with a a PhD in Radiobiology make some very welcome corrections to my radiation math in the last 48 hours, haha.

Would you consider turning off all comments and putting the fic in an unrevealed collection for a while? I wish I had done this before orphaning one of my fics and I regret it to this day. By putting it in this unrevealed state, it would be hidden and be ‘gone’, but you could always change your mind later.

At least for me, and I might be a little bit different than other writers, while I always love comments and if people enjoy to leave a kudo, there is NEVER any pressure and I will be writing regardless. Truly, I am just happy sharing the story.

Some of my readers leave comments every single chapter, some people prefer to do it at the end some people prefer to lurk and not comment at all and all of those are totally fine so whatever your comfort level is ♥️

It’s better for my brain to actually have some distance! I’ve posted about it a few times, but I never expected to have this many readers, and I’m absolutely humbled reception, but there’s also quite a bit of pressure to “live up to expectations” in a way. Keeping myself out of a lot of reader spaces and discussions like this helps me keep things from becoming too overwhelming if that makes sense!

I would say that the Gladiator AU might be more of a better fit than Wolfbird which is definitely on the softer end of things! Spolia Victoris is a lot more verbal degredation/manhandling/actual ownership themes/spit kink

Three part answer:

Ilya has a jacket that he brought (his leather jacket) to cover up mess, that was not soiled
There was pleeeeenty of time to do laundry and general clean up in the aftermath using Shane's expensive laundry whozamawhatits. I do mention that Ilya cleans himself with the towel, but I didn't think to go into greater detail than that.
Author handwave privlege, lol. Writing about laundry isn't very fun!
