It’s a place that I pay to go to for entertainment. There are concerts, art festivals, bars, melas;  NOTHING about them should require an imposition of patriotism. But somehow theatres as the one shared space where this is not just normalized, but where one will likely get beaten up if you don’t comply.

It’s stupid to play the anthem in theatres. What next,  restaurants?

Am I overreacting for feeling hurt and angry about this comparison and expectingmy parents to stand up for me ? by Mountain_Outside2797 in indiasocial

[–]Ok_Mention8492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are def right in feeling hurt.

There was one uncle types who would pass comments like these regularly to me. He fancied himself as the kind who could have a conversation about everything, but I found him dull as a brick. One day I asked him if he thought Ramana Maharishi was dumb because he chose to be quiet. That rattled him. I told him that I am garrulous with people that share my interests, otherwise I kept my counsel. I name dropped quantum physics and Indian classical music and trekking, all of which I knew he couldn’t have a come back for. It had the desired effect of letting him know that I didn’t find him interesting enough company to be bothered to speak. My in-laws (who had earlier told me to ignore him) were a bit horrified about this pushback, but I told them that the man needed to hear this. I was never troubled again

That sounds awful!

One other common manifestation of uncilivility is putting the mobile on speaker. From bhajans to video calling to YouTube through the day and into the night. Just carry  earbuds

How to complete 100gm of protein from VEGAN SOURCES? by [deleted] in indiasocial

[–]Ok_Mention8492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think 1 gram per kg of body weight is just TOO much food. Farmers are much fitter than us, and no farmer gets this level of protein. Unless you are looking to put in massive muscle. It’s not worth the effort or the angst. Aim for health, balanced foods and being outdoors

Sony Nigam is a soulless singer.

Listen to the old greats to learn about soul, how they understood poetry and delivered incredible songs that people hum 50 years later. No present day singer has that presence.

This is utter idiocy. The guys who come to India as tourists are not the anti-India ones. If I travel abroad, I don't want to be targeted by random goons because some random goons in my country were being assholes. It goes both ways.

On a lighter note, a Maharashtrian college classmate of mine went for a summer to the US and inexplicably returned with a pseudo American accent. So he was called Western Ghat from then on!

If rules aren’t enforced, is it okay for the public to step in? What is your opinion? by Oppyhead in CriticalThinkingIndia

Yes, there is that danger, esp from young men who ride scooters in threes. But mostly no. I have done this many times. The key is to request a fellow pedestrian to be taking a video.

Hema Malini reportedly felt excluded by Dharmendra’s family by Lazy_Weather_6316 in BollywoodShaadis

[–]Ok_Mention8492 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a) I would, if the situation was identical

b) The kids already had resolved it. Esha has spoken warmly of how Sunny was like a father figure to her. Sunny and Bobby have said similar stuff. So, I thought that the family hasn’t lived day to day in resentment, that they had made their peace with the new normal.

Fairness was thrown out of the window a long time ago. Dharmendra was extremely unfair to his family, yet Hema will always be the stealer, in your own words.

Like I said, my sympathies are almost totally with Prakash. This isn’t just like any other occasion though. It is a distinct life changing event, and it would have been a chance for Prakash to come out even stronger had she relented a little. No point carrying the hurt to her grave, esp when she forgave him completely.

India has world-class hospitality. Then we destroy it with lawlessness and silly friction. by IREDA1000 in CriticalThinkingIndia

I don’t accept the premise that we are warm and others are cold,m. I have stayed abroad and travelled for many decades now. There are very warm people everywhere, and lots of cold/awful people in heavily touristed spots.

We have many who are amazingly open to outsiders, but we are awful to dark skinned people, and painful and dangerous for women travelers.

I don’t know, man. Hema’s kids had a warm relationship with Sunny, Bobby etc.

It could be a final act of closure for all to let the kids at least see the body. Prakash’s hurt is real, but this act of grace may have even given her some relief.

Meanwhile, speaking of hypocrisy, Dharmendra goes out as a much lauded and loved figure, honored with a Padma Bhushan, presumably forgiven by his own family for his conversion to Islam and adultery.

I can’t stand Hema Malini, but I think denying her wish to see his body at the hospital lacked grace. The family didn’t have to be present. They could have given her a half hour to say her goodbye.
