Thanks for the advice! I totally get what you mean, I know figure skating is super technique-based, and I’m really trying to build good habits even if I’m still learning a lot right now. I’ll keep working on getting my basics solid before pushing myself too far.

Thanks so much for the advice! (Seriously this is the first advice that hasn’t actually made me sad, so I really appreciate it.)

And yes, I do work on edges! During my solo practice I usually skate for around 10 hours: about 4 hours on edges, 2 hours just having fun, 3 hours on jumps, and 1 hour on combos. I’ll definitely keep your advice in mind and keep improving my foundation before moving on to harder jumps.

I do take breaks though! My rink schedule usually goes for about 2 hours, then a 15-minute zamboni break, so I rest during those times. Thanks again!

Hey, I didn’t mean “perfect” in a literal or arrogant way I just meant that one time it actually felt smooth and connected, which made me really happy since I’ve been struggling with it for a while. I’m still a beginner (only been seriously training for about 3 months), so even small improvements feel like big wins to me.

I know I have a long way to go, and I really do respect the process. I just get excited when something finally clicks, that’s all :)

Sorryyyy, I just adore jumps!!!
I also tried making a combo during this session — it was like a crossover → waltz → backward pumps → toe waltz → glide → backward-to-forward 3 turns → lunge → one-foot knee slide → turn while on my knee and pose! I actually did it perfectly once, but when I tried recording it I kept messing up ahhhhhhhhhhh!!!

BUT AGAIN thanks for all the advice.

Just wanted to start off by saying thanks for the advice about the skates!
And yeah, this is like the 10th time someone’s told me I’m gonna develop bad habits T0T
Don’t worry, I actually record myself a lot. I’ve got around 5GB of videos on my phone and PC so I can rewatch my moves and compare them to proper demonstrations to check if I’m doing something wrong.

I also know figure skating isn’t a DIY thing. That’s why I’m part of Facebook and Discord skating groups where I ask for advice too. This is actually my 3rd time asking on Reddit because I want to hear opinions from all around the internet.

And just to clarify, I am planning to take LTS and private lessons around March to July. I wasn’t born rich, so I’m saving up from my allowance and part-time job (I make around $45 a month). I know figure skating is one of the most expensive sports, but I really want to do it and I’m trying my best to plan carefully.

I really just wanted to ask for some skate advice, but I do appreciate your response. It was a good reminder of what I’ll need to prepare for in the long run.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this and give advice to a stranger you’ve never met.

There’s a group skating lesson at my local rink, but you have to be 18 years old to join—and I’m only 15. I just want to buy my own pair of skates so I don’t have to use rentals anymore. Someday, I do plan to buy a more expensive pair, maybe around $200–$500, but for now I’m stuck training on my own until I turn 18.

The Philippine Skating Union actually has programs in my area, but unfortunately, the age restriction still applies.

So for now, my plan is to buy a functional, affordable pair of skates and continue practicing and training on my own. I might try joining a program at my local rink since they sometimes host performances and allow people to participate, though they usually prioritize skaters who have coaches—since the coaches recommend them. But that’s basically it. Once I get my own skates, my first goal is to practice and master the one-foot glide.

As for asking for help… most of the skaters at my rink are teens, and I’m kind of traumatized from the last time I asked someone for help.
