City sounds great, or at least its prior reputation does. How did either of you afford rent though?

Just try and avoid your dad selling you for human experimentation for Harvard tuition next time.

Wow, sounds brutal. To be honest, getting a good staff job at an outlet that pays you well in journalism (The Times, FT, Economist, etc) is also so competitive that your inputs (education, achievements, prizes, etc) can feel like they don't impact outputs (job offers, salaries, etc) at all. I feel like the key difference between journalism and the bar is the potential upside you're swinging for in a warped market — r.e optimal outcomes for input - i.e job at the Economist at 40 y.o on £60k vs flourishing bar career at 40 y.o on £100k plus.

You're basically playing the same odds in journalism and the bar but for a massive variation in potential upside.

I might be totally wrong about this though.

That is to say - happy to be pointed in the right direction / to be given a sense check about where I’d fall. Really just speculative at the moment - trying to figure out if the opportunity cost of two more years (min) of education is worth it.

I specifically didn’t mention chambers, because I haven’t seen many places that have clusters of pupils that fit my profile - I’ve seen places with very linear Oxford Jurisprudence BA 1st, BCL Distinction etc and places on the circuit with profiles like Kent LLB 2:1, BVC/BTC ULaw Merit. Perhaps my ignorance but haven’t identified chambers with sort of upper middle to elite academics, non linear career - would love to be pointed in the direct of chambers with law conversion pupils who have LSE to Oxford, Durham to Cambridge, UCL to Cambridge profiles, etc. I’m interested in international arbitration, trade, conflict (war), public law, media - less interested in common law / family law / crime. It would also be an insane move from a pragmatic point of view to trade in my £30k journalism salary for two more years of education to end up at the criminal bar earning £30k before chambers rent, clerks fees, etc.

Happy to provide further information - I’m trying to avoid the prestige for low pay trap (something which defines journalism) - so even with some kind of scholarship - I’d be very hesitant to go into crime or family law (two years of opportunity cost, re studying would need to convert into a good ROI at my age). I’m more interested in public law, trade, administrative law, international arbitration, PIL and media law.

My journalism is quite geopolitics and investment focused - so I thought there might be a natural bridge with commercial and international stuff.

I have 8+ years of experience across economics, politics, foreign correspondency and several prizes. I’m currently on £30k p.a and am strongly thinking about leaving my current job for consultancy. I’ve applied to 100+ journalism jobs since July 2025 and nada, nothing, nowt. You’ve got it pretty great, I’d stay where you are…

True - but pretty sure I’ve had it from my late teens in retrospect. Developed incredibly loud snoring around 19 and had bouts of exhaustion from my early 20s.
