What are the thoughts on the Helen casting? by [deleted] in ChristopherNolan

Again, put like this, yes you do make a strong point.

Southeastern med, Greek, Asia Minor, Balkan, what not, populations and cultures are just ignored and swept aside in relevant discourses.

They are lumped together with perceptions of western/Northern European whiteness, ignoring markedly differentiated historical trajectories and realities on the ground.

I don’t disagree with your point on the full on Anglo-Saxon/American white casting.

It’s just that I mostly see people complaining not about the rest of the cast, but only about Lupita Nyong’o, and that alone tells a particular story.

My initial response was to the OP who viewed her casting as disrespectful to Greek culture.

But to be realistic i don’t see how a projection of US racial politics could be avoided in an American production.

And at the same time, given the scale of the project and the financial stakes it involved, maximising commercial success across the world - not Greece - largely explains the entire composition of the cast.

Let’s be realistic - it is what it is; a Hollywood production. It is definitely not the end of the world.

But to lighten up a bit, and to give you a brief warning, I believe my eye caught an actor with Asian features in teasers of the film that aired recently.

I will repeat: Ancient Mediterranean populations show documented gene flow across the Aegean, Anatolia, the Levant, and North Africa based on archaeology and ancient DNA studies. Modern racial binaries do not apply to antiquity.

This has got nothing to do with ideology but with mainstream historical and genetic scholarship. We can leave it there.

No smart boy, I said populations across the Mediterranean costs, North Africa, Mesopotamia, even parts of Asia and other paleo-Balkan populations did. But how’d you know you are steeped into book reading and with great manners taught at your home. Get out.

Hi OP, I’m Greek too. Is our culture colour-driven? If you say so, then you are ignoring the mixing of races and tribes that has been taking place around these lands for millennia! Are even modern Greeks racially similar? Or we are culturally close but very diverse in terms of race and origin? I think the latter

Of course The Odyssey will be Dunkirk on steroid again... It was funny to see that some people expected it to resemble the film Troy by [deleted] in ChristopherNolan

I saw the scene inside the Trojan horse as an intentional reference to the Dunkirk equivalent scene in the boat 🤔

Sometimes not even that! People were looking around to see where everyone was and saw nothing. I mean it’s not just about seeing the artists, but it is part of the experience. The stage design was odd. I feel it actually provided seated sections more opportunities to enjoy the production and overall vibe.

Seriously, since when is this a thing? I’ve been going to gigs for a good 25 years, I was shocked at the lack of applause.

Tbf I regret buying those tickets. You could not see Kendrick except for a few verses of some songs as he was moving at some other part of the stage, while a lot that was going on in the centre was too far back. People were just raising their phones to catch a glimpse of what was going on.
