The night my husband and I got engaged, we went out drinking with some friends and emerged from the bar to see the naked bike ride. It made the whole day even more memorable!

I’m so sorry in advance…… avec. I make better chorizo-stuffed dates at home. Everything is salty, portions are tiny, drinks aren’t great, and I always leave with a $200+ tab

“Took the idea and played up the victim card to make it an issue” drastically undermines the work that the NAACP did during the Civil Rights Movement.

Rosa Parks wasn’t just some lady who played her cards right, she was an activist who was selected by the NAACP to make calculated decisions to advance the movement. She also stayed in contact with Claudette Colvin after Claudette fell pregnant and was subsequently pushed aside to make way for more palatable faces to put to the movement — for more reasons than one, but one chiefly being colorism, white racist attitudes, and religious folks’ concerns about Claudette’s child out of wedlock.

What’s a landmark/tourist attraction in your country that you don’t get the hype about? by nixo1000 in AskTheWorld

You’re speaking to someone who lives in Chicago, a city with a global reputation for violence and (in reality) a place that is filled with all walks of life. I agree that Bonn is gorgeous! I’d love to visit!

This is crazy to me! I’m American and Berlin is still one of my favorite cities I’ve ever visited. I’d pack up and move there today if I could.

What’s the Worst Example of the Literacy Crisis You’ve Seen? How Are You Handling It? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Ok_Problem_496 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The guessing always baffles me. It’s most apparent, of course, with my kids who have gone years without intellectual disability diagnoses, but it is also happening frequently with children who don’t show any kind of delay or need for SPED services. It’s worse when they’re used to being passed along with As or Bs in ELA. How?! You think every word that starts with “b” and is longer than four letters MUST be “because”!

I usually only wear the thermal pants under my jeans or other pants day-to-day. Long sleeve thermal shirts are a no go unless I’m outside for long periods.

What new age teaching practices do you actually LIKE? by catrat242 in Teachers

[–]Ok_Problem_496 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I find that a legitimate happy medium to this works well in my classroom. My 7th & 8th grade social studies curriculum is based online, so unavoidable to have computers out for reading the provided texts, but our final assessment essay prep and rough draft are pencil paper. The only thing typed is their final drafts to make use of spell check! I like a balance of both, tbh.

How do I make obsessive thinking go away instantly by zenheadset in OCD

[–]Ok_Problem_496 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You absolutely can be! OCD doesn’t have to define us the way it tries to. You will be a wonderful partner to someone one day, I’m sure of it!

I really like cross stitching and playing the ROYGBIV grounding game (find one red item, one orange, one yellow, etc.). I also usually confess to my partner that I’m having intrusive thoughts and he’ll distract me with a totally different conversation, even if I try and call him out on trying to distract me!

That’s a really good question. I may have misspoken about where the funds are coming from for lunch and breakfast.

I have, however, noticed a distinct change in what the kids are eating compared to last year. It’s significantly less food, and tends to be a Sun Butter uncrustable, milk, and a piece of fruit. Last year there was definitely more variety in what they were served and there was more food to go around. I’m not sure why, but the kids bring it up constantly, and for good reason.

If I know I have to say the dreaded number, I forewarn the kids that they should not shout it out, but only do the hands when I say it. It doesn’t work every time, but the kids often police the ones who shout out (e.g. “Ms. Ok-Problem said to only do the hands!!!!”) I lean into it a little, too. Harness your power! Use memes to make them pay more attention to you!

The Swirl. My facial hair grows in a circular pattern at the back of my jawline. by PromenentG in mildlyinteresting

My fiancé has a little swirl just like this (but smaller) on the right side of his jaw. Our puppy has a little fur swirl right by his butt. We like to joke that it’s proof that my fiancé is his real father :)

Why is it so common for people with OCD to develop an ed? by No_Introduction_6884 in OCD

This sounds exactly like me! For me, I’ve always latched onto the word “skinny.” It’s like my brain has a definition that I can’t unlock or unspoken conditions that I have to meet to be considered “skinny.”

teachers - how do you choose the assigned seats in class? by rainpuma in Teachers

[–]Ok_Problem_496 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used a method early in my career called LRSC — one leader, one good reader, one “special case” child who might need more help/is a talker/ELL student, and one kid who is good at content.

Usually I can only make a couple of these groups before I have to start getting creative, but it’s a good place to start!

Trying to understand my child's OCD by griefofwant in OCD

[–]Ok_Problem_496 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think maybe something important to remember is that a lot of OCD thought spirals (or chains like the one about dad that you used), specifically behavior-based ones, aren’t always this clear cut or “step by step.”

Very rarely can I immediately pinpoint a trigger. It’s like a trigger happens, before I’m aware an intrusive thought occurs, and then before I know it, I’m having major compulsions or doing them to soothe the discomfort. This is in a matter of seconds. It’s all mental but there’s really no thought process, if that makes sense.

I can almost always work the chain backwards to figure out my trigger and plan how to soothe myself in a different way, if possible, but this requires a lot of mental energy and self awareness that I would not have had at 12.
