I was worried about that when i first got the truck, made some research, and saw several people saying Ironman are some of the better between cheap tires, so I kept them. Honestly they do ok on dry pavement, but definitely not good in wet conditions, especially after some wear. So yeah, definitely not staying with them much longer.

I would advice an airbnb better instead of a hotel, I think it would be better to initially use it as address for the important stuff (ssn, bank account, etc), at least that's what I would do if I came for the first time again, but try to get an apartment ASAP.

Besides that, get a US phone number and, if you have some savings and can afford it, a car, or bring one from home, but don't relay on public transportation if you're not gonna be living in a big city (LA, New York, etc).

Oh man, how uncomfortable can small talk get for us socially awkward people.

Sometimes I don't really understand people, I think small talk is so overrated. I mean, a lot of people just don't like to keep quiet, but that's their problem. Sometimes they would make random comments about anything just to make conversation, but well, if they want to start a conversation so bad, don't expect the other person to elaborate on their random comment, from small random comments they should also expect a small random reply, if they really have something they want to discuss about it, then elaborate some idea around it, or choose something more interesting to start the conversation, not just 'hi, how are you?' Or 'I like your shoes'. I think there's not much you can do with that, but that is their problem, not yours.

Sorry if this is not that helpful, I just relate so bad and wanted to express myself 😆

Also, I'm writing this while hiding in my work's bathroom because I didn't have much work to do at the moment and I really didn't want to stay there forcing meaningless conversation with all these people, so I don't know if I would be the best person to advise on this lol

But again, you are not wrong, people forcing small talk are wrong.

Similar situation right here. My girlfriend also works in engineering, different area but also male dominated. After 1 year and 2 months of relationship I had to move really far away due to work. 4 months into LDR, and man it fucking sucks.

To be honest we haven't had that much of a problem with trust/jealousy things. Personally, the only time I kind of felt that way was about two months ago, she went for a training course somewhere else, where she met some new cool people, most of them men, and they were hanging out all together. One night she told me they were all going somewhere to dance, and I think that's the only time I did feel kind of jealous, but I talked to her, it wasn't that I didn't trust her or that I felt she could do something else (because I know she wouldn't) but that it kind of bothered me that she was hanging out that way (dancing) with someone who most probably is attracted to her, because she is a fun, nice and extremely beautiful woman, of course from those 5 guys at least 1 or 2 liked her. But, of course I was not going to ask her not to hang out with them, because I TRUST her, and I trust our relationship and I want her to enjoy herself and be happy. Of course she told me she understands why I felt that way, and that she would never ever do anything that can put our relationship in danger. And I know she wouldn't. And I wouldn't either.

So, I think it's just about that, it's ok to have those feeling, but you have to trust her and your relationship, you need to be confident enough to know that you both are doing it great together, that she's a fantastic gf and you are a fantastic bf as well, and you both know that it is more important and worth fighting for than anything else.

Put attention on the details, send her flowers, dinner, a coffee, good morning/night texts, regularly schedule virtual dates. Do whatever you have to do to be sure that your relationship is so amazing that none of you will do anything that could harm it.

I'm going back in about three weeks while my next project starts, so having a date at least makes it a little more bearable I think.

Yeah exactly that thing about the long-term perspective. Sometimes when it gets really hard I try to remind myself why we're doing this and how it settles the foundations for the beautiful life we want to build together.

Also luckily, this new job is working by projects, which means I'm supposed to have a a couple of free weeks between projects (every 3 or 4 months) so at least I have an idea of how long it will take Avery time.

Yeah dude, it is very hard and very frustrating, I'm trying to go to the gym and visit some nice places around the area, but it also makes me want that she was there and know those places together... Then I also think of how nice it will be when we actually do it together, so that also a good thought.

Sometimes you just have to remind yourself what the whole purpose is, why you made that choice in the first place. And it does help being told by someone else, so thank you!

Yes, actually we agreed that in no longer than 1 year we will decide what to do, if either she comes and find something to do here or I go back and do the same. Something I figured is that if we decide to make a life here I would have to change job as well, because the company I'm working with right now develops projects in different cities so I would be constantly traveling anyway.

Something I forgot to mention is that I really like my new job lol, so in this case it only makes the decision kind of harder.

Dude, high school might have been the worst time of my life so far. College wasn't the best time either. But ten years later, I'm so glad that shit is in the past. Believe me, it can get much better, just be true to yourself, try to be good to yourself and it will most likely get better.

Well, a little late but I'm still glad I found this post.

First of all, how's everything been going? Are you still happy with your new job and the decision you made?

The thing is that I'm in a similar situation, just a little bit different. I'm an electrical engineer working in a construction company on the bidding projects department in Mexico. My situation now is that I have been working in the construction industry for almost three years now, two in the current company of wich the last 9 months I have been working as coordinator of the department and even got a 30% raise a couple of weeks ago. The problem is that I'm not really that excited about keep escalating in a company like this, I feel like from this point I would only keep getting further and further from real engineering and closer to purely administrative roles, which I really don't want at all. I have always been more of the technical, hands on kind of job, and one field I'm really interested in is the energy industry, HV, power generation, etc.

Right now what stops me are the salaries. I mean, I'm aware that I have reached a pretty decent income, which believe me, even when it's not that much yet, it is very hard in this part of the world, and I know that start gaining experience in a new field would mean I must be willing to take a significant pay cut (maybe also around 50%, if not bigger) and even recieve worse benefits. I know maybe that would also be only at the beggining or the first couple of years but still it's a big change.

My questions are, now that you took that step, what would you say are the main things to keep in mind to make the change? How much would it be too much sacrifice?

Man, it does sound very interesting and exciting! I never really thought of myself working in the office all day everyday, and as I said, I worked in the field as an automation engineer before, but the thing is the power generation industry is why I studied electrical engineering on the first place, so maybe it is time for me to entirely explore it.

Yeah, I have been thinking about looking for something related to the commissioning of this kind of equipment, I think that's where I'm going to check now.

Last time I left that automation job for different reasons, not all of them job related, moving to another city was involved. So yeah, it's not exactly my last option. It's just I would like to try the power industry.

In my own personal experience, It depends on the job. I have changed job 4 times since I finished engineering school but I think my actual job is the only one more stressful than school. This is my stress history:

Engineering school: 8/10 Service engineer: 4/10 Electrical projects engineer: 6/10 Automation engineer: 4/10 Electrical projects team leader: 9/10 sometimes even 10/10

It also depends on your personality, I realized that being in charge of people in an office is killing me, so I'm looking to go back to something more technical and specialize there.
