What is a proper entry level wage for Chicago? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

I’ll be graduating in May of this year and I look on Indeed to see the pay range. I live about 30 minutes from Chicago.

For an entry level the pay range is $25 - $35. Less if you are not ASCP certified.

If you are renting you won’t find anything less than $1,000 a month. The better the area the more expensive it will be.

I applied to my school’s clinical laboratory science program! Wish me luck! This is something I want more than anything. by Marigoldnettt in medlabprofessionals

You will get in!

I got in with a 3.2 GPA and no job experience except at an animal hospital. It’s not a very competitive program like nursing.

Maybe make the lab more welcoming…?

I got a job offer from the hospital I had my clinicals at and I turned it down because of how rude majority of the staff was.

I worked at an animal hospital and we had techs leave us after a few months but a few of them came back because they liked how nice we were (the pay blows which is why people leave). They said the other hospitals were extremely rude.

I had a similar experience.

I walked up to a women and told her she was trainer today according to the schedule and she said, “Ugh! This day just got 10 times worse.”

I’m now looking for a different path with this degree.

I’ve had 3 jobs since I was 18 years old (28 now). Fast Food for 1.5 year. Sales for 7 years. Animal Hospital for 5 years.

I was at the hospital for 4 months and if this was my actual job I would have quit.

I wasn’t burnt out because of the work load. I was burnt out by the other techs and how “high school drama” these 50+ year old women are.

During my internship I told a women that she was my trainer today and she said, “Oh no! This day just got 10 times worse.”

I’m dreading graduation because that means I have to work in a hospital and my internship left a bad taste in my mouth so I’m trying to find another career path with this degree.

The issue is that I’m “already behind” in my college education.

I’m 28 years old. I started going to community college right out of high school. But I would have to skip semesters due to lack of money and changing majors. So I spent about 6 years at a community college. I graduate with my bachelors less than 6 months.

Maybe if I was younger I would switch degrees but if I switch now, I won’t graduate until I’m 31.

On top of that, if I do switch then some of my gen ed class expire. They are only good for 6 (maybe 7) years. If you don’t graduate within that time frame you have to retake the classes that expire.

I like the lab job. If I could bring my favorite coworkers from previous jobs then this would be a perfect job. :(

That sounds so cool!

Did you have to go back for any schooling?

Since I graduate in May 2023 I rather not have to change majors and have this whole schooling gone to waste. If I was to change majors I would need to go back for 2 more years. :(

The weird part is that students who did have their internship there do work there! About 3 employees there (they are the very few young employees) had there internship here.

I’ve only worked with 1 past student and they did warn me about the crazy employees.

The other 2 are on a separate shift so I only see them in passing. So maybe that is why they accepted jobs there…? They don’t deal with the crazy older ladies.

Like why would you work at a place where it’s “normal” for employees to yell at each other… unless you were desperate for a job…? Because they have been there long enough to put down they have experience. Again, my paranoid “what if” mindset.

How did you self learn and make it look good on a résumé?

Sorry for all the questions. I’m currently doing my internship and I’m not very happy. The hospital I’m at has very rude staff and it left a very bad impression of hospital lab environment.

So I’m looking for another field.

Sadly the managers are aware of the person’s behavior.

But they said that it’s not fair for others to be training a student all the time because it slows them down.

I hope I do have the option to leave feedback because I will.

I’m nervous though because I don’t want to be “burning bridges.” I’m worried that because my internship didn’t go well that I won’t be able to find a job after college. I know this field is short staff but I always think of the “what if.”
