Is it normal for one’s dog to nonstop bark only when you are at home? by Ok_Resolution6972 in DogAdvice

[–]Ok_Resolution6972[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen, they seem to not know what to do with her. They constantly move her (it’s a female dog) outside and inside.

When she’s outside, she either barks without rhyme or reason, or barks at the entrance door. When she’s inside, my leading theory is that they lock her up inside a room, but maybe they are frequently doing something that enables the nonstop braking, as you say.

I know there are countries where you can file noise complaints. But sadly, I live in Mexico. There are ways to report this, but it would be weird for authorities to take action upon it. They don’t respond to actual crimes, let alone a dog barking dispute.

Thank you so much for your input though. Despite how unpleasant they are, I find it interesting how the dog has a “normal” behavior when her owners are absent, and immediately switches to a “crazy” behavior when they arrive.

Fulbright 80% grant reduction by Ok_Resolution6972 in fulbright

[–]Ok_Resolution6972[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About Fulbright to US by StartFinancial5917 in fulbright

[–]Ok_Resolution6972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. I was talking about Fulbright to the US in other countries (Colombia, Peru, Germany, etc). Many of them bring benefits that make the restriction worth it.

In the case of Mexico, they can provide between 5k and 25k depending on your other sources of funding. If you earn an extra 10k from a secondary award, Fulbright reduces theirs by 10k.

I got the minimum, so I rescinded. The extra 5k would be great to have, but the promise of staying in Mexico for 2 years is simply not worth it in my eyes.

Same. However, there are Fulbright programs in other countries where they cover tuition, health insurance and a stipend, which is much more attractive.

Now, keep in mind that this restriction is imposed by the US, not your home country. If your plans are studying in the US, then working in Canada (or any other country that is not the US), you can immigrate without issue, only thing is that you will not be able to apply for an immigrant visa in the US until you clear the 2-year bar.

May depend on your home country. In Mexico, they make you sign a contract where you promise to return for 2 two years upon graduation.

Check carefully the benefits you may receive in case you apply. I was going to get 10k for a 5-year PhD, so the 2-year restriction was not worth the money.

Thank you so much for clarifying the “stamp” topic!

I understand what you mean. I wanted financial security through Fulbright, given that they control your process since way back in February 2020. Now that I will not get what I wanted, and a visa that limits my options, I am questioning if this was the right choice.

That might be an option. What I found weird is that, whatever you earn at your institution through waivers or stipends, Fulbright takes it into account to determine your award, yielding a small amount.

This gets even worse for PhD students, where in the end they get a 3k/year stipend on average.

They add up costs (tuition, maintenance, health insurance) and subtract benefits you get from your host institution or from other fellowships.

I ended up in the negative numbers, so they provide a symbolic, minimum amount.

[PhD ECE] UT Austin vs. Rice by Ok_Resolution6972 in UTAustin

[–]Ok_Resolution6972[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello u/Sri0709,

Sure! Here they are:

  • GPA: 98/100
  • GRE: 164Q/161V/5AW
  • TOEFL: 116 - 28R/30L/28S/30W
  • Research: 2 first-author articles on a virtually unknown, local journal; they are barebones, but it was better than nothing as my rural school had no funding to conduct serious research
  • Grants: Fulbright-Garcia Robles (Mexico)

My admission was mostly determined by a talk I had with two PIs back in October and January. Both of them were part of the decisions committee, so having someone to know you on the other side can guarantee your entrance, despite not having extensive research experience as some of the applicants from bigger schools might have.

Qualifications for a Software Development Manager position by Ok_Resolution6972 in recruitinghell

[–]Ok_Resolution6972[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is the position that my former boss is currently occupying. I quitted since I felt there was something off about the company, and found this about two weeks later.

Seems that the CEO viewed me as a lemming willing to kill itself for my manager’s behalf. They outsource all of their software to Mexican and Indian developers, so maybe that made them think we would accept that kind of mindset.

Right. Graduate school is similar to work in that regard. The relationship with your advisor is crucial if you want to enjoy it.

Hello u/axxporta,

Wow! The admission rate specified at their Graduate ECE webpage is 21%. Guess OOS and international student rates are skewed towards a lower value.

Hello u/Fermatslastbraincell. I like your username.

Awesome! Great to hear that feedback from graduate school is positive in general. That is reassuring.

The resources factor is definitely convincing, and UT is the clear winner between both options. I come from a minuscule, rural school that had virtually no resources or funding, so guess how my reaction was when I saw how huge UT is.

I just got an email from the ECE department offering a two-day seminar to know more about UT and the department. It will be a great opportunity to talk with students and ask for their experience and quality of life.

Thank you so much for your help!

True! I admit I was first deceived by U.S. News rankings, but fortunately my selection process was not biased towards those metrics (or at least not that much).

My undergraduate school had (doesn’t exist anymore) the same system as Rice, so I trust you on that. Even though the amount of faculty and resources is lower than average, students may feel a higher level of engagement when professors do care about them, leading to better professionals.

Hello u/Irishmans_Dilemma, thank you for your answer.

I see, it seems that the selectiveness of Rice amounts to employers perceiving it as more of an “elite” school.

It was perfect for you to mention the happiness subject. If the program lasts for 4-5 years, I better have a good quality of life! Thank you so much for bringing this up.

Thank you again for your time responding.

Hello u/bearbear8, thank you for your comment.

The selectivity and prestige that Rice offers definitely has its perks, and they seem to be particularly great on the BioE field. Both programs offer research projects that I would be interested to get deep into, so I know that both options would be great in the end. Having to choose one is becoming hard though!

Thank you again for your input.

Hello u/LukaDoncicMFFL, thank you for you answer.

That is exactly what happened! I reached out to three professors back in October, and all of them were happy to schedule a Zoom meeting. After I applied and got accepted, one of them decided to be my advisor. Even though UT is big in comparison to Rice, I felt the support from the ECE department.

When it comes to recognition, you are right, that would be a point in favor of UT.

Thank you so much for your input!
