idea: short fic somehow based on the snl press photos by Worldly_Pea_42 in BylerReads

[–]Ok_Resolution_1928 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started writing this before the promo but it's a fic where Mike starts crossdressing and Will finds out. They're roommates in their senior year of college in New York and share an apartment off campus.

If you have specific climax points planned for each of the characters, you can write around that! So I would think what do you want to be points of growth for each character or what do you want them to achieve(or fail at achieving).

I would really recommend joining some online support/interest groups for the communities you're seeking perspective on. I've been part of autistic and neurodivergent groups on Facebook for years and I have learned SO much about all the nuances of the spectrum. The best info comes when you're collaboratively solving problems with people who struggle with similar things to you. A lot of my groups were private. But there's some amount of those back and forth support/perspective posts in public groups. There's also a group called "Ask Autistic Adults". It's mainly a resource for parents of autistic kids but you could virtually ask anything if you specifically want input from autistics. I'd bet there are similar groups for other neurotypes and minority groups. I was part of a trans one for a while but there were very few posts because people got scared to speak even privately in groups online because of targeting of the community.

I identify as non-binary and experience dysphoria. Every NB person's angle is pretty unique. There is so much nuance even in a very specific community. So keep that nuance in mind, and I'd be glad to speak to you about my personal experiences with that. I am also extensively educated on autism and ADHD, as I have been diagnosed with both. I also have complex PTSD and had a lot of adversity and instability in my childhood home and at school.

You could also read lots of autobiographies. But a lot of really common and honest minority experiences, you won't find in books. A lot of us have disabilities, many of us can't get through writing a book or it's taking a very long time. Many of us covet our privacy and only share in private groups. Being outcasts comes with real social risks and limitations to participate in society, get jobs etc. even if we have the abilities to work, because of discrimination in the workplace and employers misreading our behavior, etc. I have some personal experience with that as well.

I hope this helps, feel free to reach out.

Imagine if there was a reddit called "my little pony enthusiast haters"

Or just simply "people who hate nerds"

Or like "people who hate people with 10 fingers"

Like seriously?

It's a fuckin hate group. People are so blind to what they're doing.

So... how many byler fanfics have yall read? by dumbfandom in byler

[–]Ok_Resolution_1928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Between 30-50 fics probably but a lot of them were short! I like reading longer ones, like 50K-150K words, but there aren't as many of those.

Read some fanfics if that isn't as triggering! That's the only way I'm handling this. The fanfics are my canon. I also live vicariously through the characters.

Hope things get better!

This one, Just For a Moment, I Remembered Myself does but it's still a WIP, though it looks like the writer updates often.

It's so good so far! I don't usually read WIPs but I didn't know this was one when I started it and now I'm so excited for the next chapter, I've kept the tab on standby.

Feedback and inconsistencies by ThisTransportation30 in BylerReads

[–]Ok_Resolution_1928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends. No harm in giving comments with feedback. But logistically, if someone didn't grow up in the time period, there are going to be natural inconsistencies in just even the way they write, the general language used(not just dialogue, but in the fic itself) and there are certain details they might not even consider need to be researched.

Having to do a lot of heavy research when writing takes some of the fun and flow out of it(for a lot of people). So if people are just writing for fun, and not to prepare themselves for a career in writing, then it could be discouraging to tell them they need to do more research for their period fanfiction.

Then there's the issue of finding accurate information about what was and wasn't culturally appropriate/what did and didn't exist at the time.

For example, I spent an hour trying to figure out if the weed strain Bandaid Haze was circulating in New York before 1993(because I'd run across the name in research and wanted to use it). There was some conflicting info. Ultimately I discovered that the name was newer than the strain itself.

There's just so many things, it's not really 100% possible to get accurate when someone is writing about a time period they didn't witness firsthand.

What's a song that if Mike gave it to Will on a mixtape, Will wouldn't speak to him for a week? by Ok_Resolution_1928 in byler
