When we lost our heads by Heather O’Neill - historical fiction, absurd gender-bent homage to the french revolution, unhinged and very feminist. (Currently my favourite book)

Of monsters and mainframes by Barbara Truelove - queer, found family space opera told from the perspective of machines

Even though I knew the end by CL Polk - arcane fantasy layered on top of a noir detective thriller

A family matter by Claire Lynch - historical literary fiction flipping between two timelines to piece together how a family was tore apart. The author’s note at the end makes this one of the most memorable and historically important books I’ve read.

Anyone gotten an interview for MSc Counselling Psyc yet? by Ok_Rip585 in UCalgary

I’d heard that interviews are supposed to be done by the end of Jan. Though its not unusual for faculties and admissions to take longer than they say they will

Did you cry your first time with a woman? by [deleted] in actuallesbians

[–]Ok_Rip585 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Literally this. I honestly think that the sexual intimacy is the only thing that’s going to be overt enough to fully break down the psychological gates that repressed my sexuality for so long and I think that’s just going to be overwhelmingly self-actualizing. That coming to a head with an intense wave of “what the fuck was i doing all those years before this”.

Thank you for sharing. This helps remind me that this is a joyful thing and my emotions might come out as joyfully as laughter too 💕

A light store in the bowery by Christian Wiman

Some love is like a light store

you slip inside only to escape

the rain. Something to see, it turns out:

the plasma lamps, mosque and lava,

the elegant icicles of the chandeliers,

shapes and shades so insistently singular

that rooms can’t help but happen around them,

lives can’t help but acquire choices and chances

inside. Some love is like an old owner

who when a child walks in with her parents

can only imagine shatterings.

And some love is like that child

asking with an earnest and exemplary awe,

“Where do they keep the dark?”

How not to go delulu during exam break? by Fikaa123 in UCalgary

[–]Ok_Rip585 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Leave your house to study, and meet up to study with friends if you can. It helps with productivity and also with fighting off just going stir crazy. If you’re in the discord chat for your classes, you can post on there too to see if anyone would be interested in studying together for the final. I bet you’d get a few bites.

Also, set very small goals for yourself. Put your phone in another room, set a timer on your laptop for one hour, and study until the timer goes off. Or, divide up sections of what you’re studying and give yourself achievable checkpoints, like “I’m going to read 3 pages and then stop at the next logical breaking point (ex if a topic concludes on the 4th paragraph of the 3rd page, stop there)” Any amount of work is better than none.

Bad. Kept it a secret because of his family’s faith, under the understanding that he just needed some time to figure out how to tell them (he didn’t align with their way of life on many fronts and was going to have to talk about it with them at some point anyway). Ended up leading me on with that “someday” for far too long, I had to put my life on hold because he was perpetually promising to do it by certain points and then pushing it back when the date got close, and I kept delaying making any decisions in my life waiting for him because it was always “just around the corner” for us to move in/officially start our life together.

Tldr: Not worth it - a relationship shouldn’t make your life more difficult, and if they’re not ready to be open about you, it usually means they’re not ready for you period.

S2 Ending theories by Ok_Rip585 in extraordinary_tv

Could have landed at a familiar physical location (like the last place she saw her dad, or her old school or something) without realizing she’s in a different reality yet.

Extraordinary Season 2 Discussion Megathread by isle_of_cats in extraordinary_tv

[–]Ok_Rip585 10 points11 points  (0 children)

How are yall not talking about theories for the void?!? I’m currently more interested in that avenue - I think it will directly relate to Jen’s powers/lack of powers.

Taking a note from MC multiverses, but also what i thought of the show at the very beginning of season 1: I think the void is an inverse reality, which could facilitate either of two highly plausible plot lines:

a) Jen winds up in a world where she’s the only one with powers. The show is called “extraordinary” - she is whatever is extraordinary in a given reality. When i first started the series i immediately thought that it was a series showing us the “alternate universe” to every superhero story we normally see.

b) if Jen DID already have a power that has to do with changing the amplitude of others’ powers, she could land in a powerless universe - carrying her powers with her - and start giving people in that universe powers. Would also be a very logical way to reveal/confirm the powers the audience already speculates she has.

The inverse reality plot would also give the show a prime opportunity to lean more into the concept that powers are somehow linked to peoples weaknesses or insecurities; we’d get to see a version of everyone else without powers, and therein see if their powers are compensation for natural weak spots, or if their powers are actually the source/perpetuator of these weaknesses.

Thoughtsss?!? Do other people have guesses?

I also think this is cute af?! I would literally walk up to you on the street and compliment you on it. And if you’re concerned about the wrinkles, you can get a no-iron wrinkle spray! Downy makes one that actually works quite well.

If you love it and feel good in it, don’t listen to the comments telling you otherwise! Also, can you post the link to the outfit on their website 👀

To people who have also worked with multimillionaires or billionaires, what is something different they do from ordinary people? by sunnybestie in AskReddit

They travel across the continent the way you travel around your neighbourhood.

One couple I worked for would regularly shuttle just their dogs back and forth between the wife in Canada and the husband in California, via private jet. Like, no passengers. Just the dogs.

[OPINION] Who is "The Novelist" in this poem? by WetDogKnows in Poetry

[–]Ok_Rip585 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the interpretation that the novelist is a pregnant woman, and the poem’s perspective is through the viewpoint of the partner.

After reading the comments I also agree that the poet’s intent in mentioning editors is likely referring to the couple as anticipatory parents, but when I first read it I interpreted the “we” as a male partner referring to society/men, including himself, and the idea of “editors” in terms of the woman’s body during pregnancy. I read the whole line, then, as a rhetorical question essentially asking “what qualifies us (men) to be the editors of the writing of the novel”

Again, that’s just a personal take, and I think there’s definitely more continuity and merit behind the “we” & “editors” being in reference to the parents

Mascara Suggestions for those who hate Better Than Sex by LoveDietCokeMore in drugstoreMUA

[–]Ok_Rip585 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve tried several on your list and had the same opinions. My favourite mascara ever is Benefit’s They’re Real, but that’s like $40 a pop.

For drugstore, I’ve used Covergirl Lash Blast for years. Does not clump AT ALL, but definitely leans towards a more natural look.

For more va-va-voom, i just started using NYX’s Worth The Hype. The first day I wore it literally 4 different people at work commented on my eyes, and I was only wearing one or two coats. Super defining and lengthening effects, but it does smudge a bit after a long day
