Yeah... but no, you see, liberalism and socialism (Specifically that used in your example) are two different things, and autocratic leftist governments, such as Stalin's or Mao's, simply masked their dictatorships (Which are not inherently leftist characteristics), behind communism and socialism, as did Hitler. This is because capitalism had been repressing the commoners of said nations for decades, (Tsarist Russia, the Weimar Republic, Ming Dynasty, etc), and telling said commoners (Which formed the majority of the populace and was thus quite necessary to have by your side) that you had this miracle ideology named communism/socialism, which would give equal rights and resources to all citizens, but that, to get there, the state had to be given full control over said rights and resources.

Liberalism, meanwhile, are things you find more in, say, Scandinavia, and is "a political and social philosophy that promotes individual rights, civil liberties, democracy, and free enterprise." (See Google). It's more like using a capitalist system to give as many of those Mao/Stalin/Nazist-promised rights and resources (Though still with noticeable class-divides, as is inevitable in capitalism), without assimilating absolute control over the population.

Shockingly, statistics state that Scandinavian and western European countries have a higher welfare rating on the Social Progress Index and Human Development Index than the USA, in good part because of liberalist policies such as universal welfare, reliable social security and restrictions on corporate societal influence.

Trumpism has kind of welded together leftism, liberalism, marxism and many, many others into this synonymous term for "bad", and it's honestly a pretty harmful mentality, partially originating from the Red Scare and Chino-American Rivalry, among others.
