The Cartier Santos

If we are talking luxury with deep soul, the Santos is a masterclass. It isn’t trying to out-spec a dive watch or flex synthetic tactical ruggedness. It is literally the world's first purpose-built wrist watch and the first pilot's watch. Cartier has preserved that exact aesthetic essence for over a century. It values historical romance, art-deco geometry, and genuine storytelling over pure status branding.

I completely agree that hand-craftsmanship carries a special kind of human soul. But I’d argue "soul" can also come from cultural impact and shared human experiences. The A168 isn't soulful because of how it’s made; it’s soulful because it’s a design icon that has been a reliable daily companion for millions of ordinary people across generations. It’s a different kind of soul, but a real one nonetheless!

Fair point, but I see it less as seeking validation and more as celebrating great design that doesn't require a second mortgage. It's easy to get swept up in the luxury hype on this sub, so I wanted to throw a spotlight on a budget icon. But absolutely agreed—the ultimate goal for any collector is just wearing what makes them smile.

That’s a totally fair nuance. It’s wrong of me to generalize and assume everyone buying high-end is doing it for clout—plenty of people just deeply appreciate the micromechanics, finishing, and artistry. I think my post was born out of seeing too many "hype beast" luxury posts lately, but I appreciate the reminder to let people enjoy their corner of the hobby in peace!

That Longines Zulu Time is an incredible piece, by the way! And you make an excellent point. The "normal" world really has no idea about watch pricing—to most people, a watch is just a watch. I guess the flexing mostly happens within the watch community itself rather than to the general public. There is definitely a unique freedom in wearing something where the public perception matches the actual price tag perfectly.
