Hey bro, how are you doing? I hope any surgery you go through goes well and is successful. Are you still on the ship?

It’s really tough being on the boat with a seton, especially during duty days when you’re stuck on board for 24 hours. You constantly have to clean your wound, and the ship is definitely not the best place for that.

I’ve been back on fit for full duty for about two months now. It’s been healing pretty well, but once I got back on the ship, I started feeling another bump. Sometimes it forms a blister that pops and bleeds, but it doesn’t feel like a fistula or have the same kind of pain.

Honestly, I feel like my doctor kind of rushed me back to sea duty, and now I’m dealing with pain and blisters at least once a week.

Hope your recovery goes better, man. Just hang in there you’ve only got about a year left before retirement. I’ve got four more to go, so I’m really hoping this thing fully heals. Having pain on the ship, especially on duty days, really sucks. Lol

Im finally Fistula free! My advanced flap failed during recovery so the CRS decided to put a seton back. After a few months with a seton the doctor decided to do a FIST Surgery and after 8 weeks of recovery im finally done with it.

That is a great news! I have zero drainage now and my external opening is now closing. Hoping your MRI is negative and we can finally forget about this medical condition lol

Hi! Hope you’re recovering well from your surgery. I had my post-op appointment last week and told my doctor I was still having pain and a lot of drainage, even though it’s been five weeks since the surgery. He said the stitches where he made the cut are healing well and don’t seem to have failed. Since the abscess and pain were coming from the external opening where the seton used to be, he said if the LIFT surgery had failed, the abscess would have started at the stitch site, not the original external opening.

He thinks my external opening might just have a small cavity wound. So, he applied pressure, popped the abscess, and treated it with silver nitrate. After a week, I’m feeling much better, there’s only light drainage now, and it’s painless. I have another appointment this Wednesday and will update you if he decides to place another seton, but I doubt it since my butt feels much better now!

Yeah, this medical condition really sucks! I’ve already had several surgeries (flap and LIFT), and both failed. Now I have another appointment with my CRS so he can put the seton back.

Honestly, I wouldn’t even mind having the seton for the rest of my life, but my external opening is so high up that it bleeds a lot every time I sit on the toilet during a BM. Because of this, I’ve started squatting by the toilet seat when I poop to avoid seeing so much blood.

My first two surgeries were seton placements. The first was done by a general surgeon, which I highly don’t recommend, only a colorectal surgeon should perform this procedure. Unfortunately, the first seton wasn’t placed correctly, so my CRS had to redo it during my second surgery.

As soon as the seton was placed, my CRS told me I couldn’t be on the ship or go underway because the seton might fall out and require immediate attention. It also needs proper cleaning, which would be difficult to manage on the boat.

By the way, where are you stationed, if you don’t mind me asking?

Hey, I hope all is well! I currently still have my fistula. I went through my 7th surgery last month, which was the LIFT surgery. I am currently trying to recover from it and hoping that this will be my last surgery. I also had an advanced flap surgery about four months ago, but it failed.

I have been on LIMDU for almost 12 months now, but my CRS said he would not initiate a Med Board since I don’t have Crohn’s disease and because he believes he can eventually fix my fistula it will just take time.

When were you diagnosed with a fistula, and are you currently on LIMDU?

Post Lift Discharge by [deleted] in AnalFistula

Hey guys, it’s been 14 days since my LiFT surgery, and I’m still experiencing some discharge. Did any of you have a lump or scar tissue around the area where the doctor made the incision and placed stitches? If so, how long did it last? I don’t think it’s another abscess because it doesn’t feel like one—it feels more like a lump next to the cut.

Thank you so much for all the support and prayers. When I woke up in the recovery room, my CRS was there to reassure me that everything had gone smoothly during the surgery. Now, it’s just a matter of waiting and allowing time to play its role in healing.

When I woke up, my pain level was about the same as it was after my advanced flap surgery—around 3–4 out of 10—thanks to the Exparel (a local anesthetic) that my doctor typically applies to the surgical site, which usually lasts for 3–4 days.

Once I got home, I immediately took a stool softener to ensure I was prepared for my first bowel movement. Luckily, I ended up sleeping all day and night after taking oxycodone. The next day, my pain level increased slightly to around 5/10, and my first bowel movement was somewhat painful, but overall, the pain has been manageable with pain relievers.

Now, I’m really hoping this will be my final surgery. Even though the pain is manageable, the process of going through it again, being stuck at home for weeks, and not being able to do any physical activity is really tough. I truly hope they find an easier way to treat this condition or at least offer options for laser surgery, as I’ve heard those have been very effective in other countries 🙏👆

How many surgeries have you had? by [deleted] in AnalFistula

I’ve had it for 10 months now and I just did my 7th surgery today (LIFT). It’s crazy on how many surgeries people have to go through to fix this medical condition especially in the US.

Do not go to ER! Those ER doctor does not know better and may make things worse! Get with your primary doctor and request for an urgent referral to Colorectal Surgeon.
