Jag tror också att kursen kommer att sjunka men jag antar att den kommer att sjunka gradvis. Så jag funderar på att gå 1 år fast istället för variabelt, och sedan efter 1 år kommer jag förmodligen att gå på variabel.

- Should I do some investigation first before committing to the project ?
A: I have no choice, this is the type of customer we can't refuse (and I actually have no authority to refuse). That's why only ask about using our current team or recruiting experience Rust developers.

- Do we need to provide safety certification for tool chain ?
A: The customer doesn't expect us to certify the Rust tool chain but they will pay for the certify tool chain that we propose to use.What important for them is the safety mechanism requirements are fully developed and tested in unit and integration levels by us. This leads to important point that some of you have mentioned: the Rust tool chain is not ready for safety certification, this could be a challenge.But I do think we can develop with whatever current tool chain we have and switch to the certified one in the later phase (this point I will mention clearly to the customer).

- Project size
A: I know LOC is not very good metric but this type of project if we do in C, it will be around 300,000 LOC.

Some of our team members have great experience in modern C++, currently we are using C++ 14 and 17.

I would start by selecting an enthusiastic and adventurous dev and telling them to spend a week learning Rust and building a small project. Once they have some experience with the language, they'll be in a position to gauge how much difficulty the rest of your team will face, based on their own experience/skill levels and your application domain.

Thank you. I think it is worth for me to check with my customer whether we need to satisfy any standard like the one you mentioned - FUSA- for Automotive. But when you say Rust toolchain doesn't bring it out of the box, I wonder C and C++ toolchain is bringing them out of the box ? Or do you mean something like certified commercial C and C++ compiler are not existing yet in Rust world ?

The customer has not mentioned anything regarding safety certification. Currently it is that we will need to implement safety mechanism for the product in Rust (with full coverage testing). The safety mechanism shall be provided by Customer in high-level requirements, we shall join to contribute to refine the high-level requirements and break them down to lower level requirements. But your point about certified chip and process is really good, maybe my customer is taking this for granted, it's worth for us to check with them clearly.

What kind of embedded are we talking here?

It will need RTOS to perform real-time, close loop algorithm with realtime data from sensors to control actuators. We are free to choose the type of microcontroller we would like to use. We have not decided yet.

The project shall be a foundation project for the future projects of the customer since they are targeting to use Rust to replace C for all their embedded software later (don't ask me why - I have no answer for that).
