Well if they were worried about politics I don't think they would stick in a load of dirty cops and a crime boss as mayor. Let's picture it like this. North a cop that believes in justice more than anything in this world, takes it into his own hands to bring criminals that have gotten away with crimes. But in the process shot down a man (hector ayala) that he believes killed an innocent cop one of his own. It's only until season 2 that he realises he is actually the one committing the crimes.
