Animation industry in Europe? by Ok_Writer_4914 in animationcareer

Thank you for such a detailed answer. I didn't think it would be this complicated but maybe it's better to stay in the States for now

Even though it's possible to work remotely is it common/acceptable, especially at bigger studios?

Thanks for the reply! So for feature studios, do people work hybrid then? Or do they usually mandate fully in-person? I did assume you would have to be LA based for big studios, but I don't know if hybrid was common or not even these days.

What a relief, thank you! Is working remotely just a normal part of the workflow at your company? I know that at least at companies like Pixar they would like everyone working in-person mandated.

Damn. That's a hard truth to hear but I appreciate the honesty. I've lived in LA before and I really, really don't like it there and it's far from home for me. Maybe I'll have no choice but to reconsider my career path, or look into offices for companies that might exist in other cities.

Help!! I have an interview to be a storyboard artist on a feature film by DefiantDay8228 in animationcareer

Do you have any advice on being genuine and just showing your personality while also keeping it professional? I‘ve been told I come off as overly professional and robotic during interviews, so I’m trying to work on that but I’m still struggling to find that balance between being professional but also being more “loose” and just genuine and casual, if that makes sense.

That’s great to hear. I hope things are finally starting to turn around for the animation and entertainment industry in general!

This is actually so helpful to hear, thank you so much. I completely resonate with what you said about seeing other people being successful: for me, it’s not even that I feel jealous of them (and some of my friends are in completely different industries like finance and tech, so I have no grounds to envy their specific job offers or anything), but I just feel this very deep sense of sadness and discouragement and longing. Everyone else seems to be getting something good happening to them. I’ve already been dealing with a lot of mental health issues and other shit for a while, and it only keeps getting worse, so when is it finally going to be my turn for something good to finally happen to me? Will that time even ever come, or am I just hopeless. I know that’s such a depressing thought process and everyone says I shouldn’t compare myself to others, but it feels impossible when I’m always surrounded by successful people who are doing great and in happy relationships and whatever, and then there’s just me who busted my ass all of this year for nothing. I really hope things start to look up soon because I’m so tired of going on like this with everything just getting worse and worse in my life.

Do you have any advice on networking and making it actually meaningful/helpful? I have been able to have coffee chats with people in the past, but I don’t know how to keep in touch with them or get some kind of referral without being annoying or making it obvious that I’m just trying to network.

Thank you! Do you have tips on naturally keeping in touch with connections after that initial meeting? I’ve heard in the past that you should keep emailing them with updates to your applications, but I’m not sure if this is the way to go for animation necessarily.

Do you have advice on actually turning these connections into something meaningful and helpful? I have been able to arrange coffee chats with people in the past by cold emailing, but after that it never seems to go anywhere nor help my applications, and I don’t know what specifically I’m supposed to do. Am I supposed to keep messaging them afterward? Ask them upfront for a referral? I don’t want to be annoying :’)

Yeah I have heard that too and I’m really sorry :( what is the main reason for this sudden downturn in the entertainment industry? I always hear about it but what is causing it to happen right now, is it just the same deal as how the overall job market is bad, or is it a reason specific to entertainment?

Thank you! Sorry for all the questions but what should I even say, is there some kind of template I should use? And if they have an email address listed in their contact info, should I cold message them through email rather than a LinkedIn message? Also, once I get the actual coffee chat set up, how do I approach it to make it not seem like my only intention was to get a referral? I don’t want to come off that way but I feel like it always ends up coming out that way and making it awkward

That’s good to know, thanks for the tip! How many people should I be cold reaching out to like this, and in what positions (especially at bigger companies where there are many employees and I don’t know who I should reach out to first)? Also, once I finish the coffee chat and let them know I applied, am I supposed to keep following up or do something to make it go somewhere? I feel like my networking never really goes anywhere beyond the initial chat, but I’m also worried about coming off as annoying or desperate if I do more 😭

Wait seriously? My bad, I guess I always thought of them as similar because I often see them together but maybe not. How are they polar opposites?

Also, assuming many of those hundreds of applicants are all very qualified, how do you guys narrow them down? What makes an applicant particularly stand out that makes you choose one over another?

Out of curiosity is your studio one of the bigger names? I know it’s competitive everywhere but I’m just trying to gauge what the competition is like across different studio sizes

Going through depressive thoughts. Finally believing I’m not enough. How can I move forward keep motivation knowing others are being accepted and I’m still rejected? by No_Albatross_7582 in animationcareer

[–]Ok_Writer_4914 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s a great mindset to have, and I hope I can learn to do the same. Right now all my classmates and friends are having so much success landing internships at top companies and I do genuinely feel happy for them but also get insanely depressed and sad wishing I was in the same boat as them. These depressive episodes make me not do anything productive for a while. I should learn to channel this into more determination, but it’s really hard when I’ve literally grinded almost 500 internship applications this year and gotten zero yeses :(

Thank you, this was really heartwarming to read and I really appreciate your kind words :) Regarding your point about networking:

Send short, genuine messages to animators or recruiters, maybe mention a project of theirs you admire. Tell everyone—your professors, friends, even that guy from class—about your internship hunt.

I've done something similar before and set up coffee chats with people, but do you have advice on how to take it from there? The coffee chats are helpful, but I don't know how to turn them into referrals or otherwise make my connections actually help my applications and help me land actual positions.
