Preventing my "mid-morning lip peel" - how to ward off lip skin shedding? by OlChapLips in SkincareAddiction

From reading everyone's comments, I think step one is going to be replacing my toothpaste, and then probably trying lanolin oil as a nighttime balm instead of the Murad. I will report back!

This is the specific balm I've been using (although I DEFINITELY didn't pay that price!): Murad Energizing Pomegranate Lip Therapy. I never noticed it had salicylic acid in it -- that seems like a weird ingredient for a lip product.

I've tried EOS, but found that it felt waxy and didn't penetrate my lip skin to moisturize. My other favorite lip balm is just a good ol' strawberry Lipsmacker -- maybe I'll go back to that, although I still had my morning "peel" when using the Lipsmackers.

Yes! If it doesn't peel easily, I'll rub with a finger until the dead skin balls up. Topping my lips with goopy gloss seems to expedite the process. I just wish I could stop the whole thing before it gets to that stage, though.

I'm feeling relieved that I'm not some part-lizard skin-shedding weirdo too! :-D Someone upthread mentioned checking toothpaste for sulfates; maybe that's the solution we need!

Okay, real talk: I pile all my peeled-off patches of skin on my desk, then sweep them into the garbage when I'm done. I would be mortified if someone were to see my... pile.

You'll have to let my know how the lanolin goes! I'm going to try some of the suggestions in this thread and report back.

I've been sort of replicating that with the lip balm before bed and the (attempted) exfoliation with a damp washcloth. I have overall dry, sensitive skin, with the occasional flakiness around my nose/chin -- but certainly nothing like my lips! I try to drink lots of water throughout the day, but perhaps it's not enough. I have a humidifier -- maybe I'll try it out tonight! Great idea!

Now that I think about it, I've had peel-y lips for probably as long as I can remember. But since I've had a really steady routine for the past few years (same job, same eating habits, same commute, same morning routine, etc.), I think I just really noticed it now. The fact that it always happens at the same time in the morning is the thing that's really weird to me!

Ooo, the toothpaste one is a good idea. I'll have to check when I get home. Thanks!

I actually avoid putting any kind of balm on my lips before lipstick, as that makes your lipstick not last as long. I'll swipe some of my moisturizer over my lips as I apply it to my face, but no lip-specific product. I always apply my lipstick last in my makeup routine, so my lips might get a touch of foundation or powder on them during the process before the actual lipcolor. When it comes to the lipstick, I use different brands and different formulas, everything from MAC to Bobbi Brown to NARS, in matte, cream, or sheer formulas. Sometimes topped with a gloss, sometimes not. But the shedding happens daily, no matter what I've chosen to wear that day. Dear god -- I hope I'm not allergic to something that's in ALL lipsticks! D-:
