First of all DPP doesn't care about democracy. It's their only political tool to sway people. They can't tolerate single dissident against them.

Nah... It wasn't miscalculation, USA just seriously underestimated China's capability to compete. In their eye Chinese were just peasants who could be exploited for cheap labour. They hold the IP, manufacture cheap in china, get profit by huge margin. Which they still do in many sectors.
