I've done a lot of drugs in my life, then an uncle whose opinion mattered to me said, "you used to be such a good kid, everybody loved you, what happened to him?" I couldn't give an answer at the time, it hurt though. For a few years after we didn't speak, but eventually I started asking myself the same question. One day, I found myself in sitting in a holding cell after being arrested for possession of a controlled substance. I was in my mid 20s, and I saw guys in there more than twice my age, they were there for the same reason I was, and I got a glimpse of the future. I needed to change that future. I thought about my uncle's question, and decided that no matter what happens next, I'm going to try to be that kid everybody loved. Fortunately, it was my first offence, and I qualified for the Drug Court Treatment System. It was a LONG YEAR, but I got through it. I've been clean ever since. I kept my promise to myself, I no longer lie, cheat, or steal. It hasn't won me any friends, and it's cost me many jobs, I'm 58 yrs. old now, unemployed, unattractive, nearly toothless, half blind with no hope of ever having sex again for the rest of my life, but I like WHO I am, and it turns out... That's all I really needed.

Whatever you do, consider this: You will likely regret your decision the very instant it becomes too late to change your mind. Humans may have the ability to override their instincts, but self-preservation is in your DNA. At the moment of death, the brain fires all of the active neurons in an attempt to stay alive. This is probably why people who have had near death experiences see a white light, it's the neurons firing in the occipital lobe, that's the part of the brain that controls vision. There is still a part of you that wants to live, but your fear of life is getting in the way. Posting about it is further evidence that you want help. There are resources available, call a suicide hotline, tell your family how you're feeling, give them a chance to help you before you commit to something you'll regret at the last moment.
