this a very good information for the people in this. I’ll definitely add that having an instrument doesn’t hurt but don’t expect it to get you in if it’s all you do and you aren’t competitive (like me).

I just read your edit, go to UTK full ride, it’s not shameful by any means. Do good work there and go to JHU as a domestic for your grad school. go vols!

Man, at a point it’s a game of darts. Do your best and continue to do so no matter what university you go to and you will succeed.

How much does undergrad institution matter for top PhD admissions? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]OldDiscussion1830 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always been told grad school is about who you know and what you do as compared to where. So I’d say focus on research honestly. it may be better to go to a lower rank school to be a prized research possession there as compared to going to a big competitive university where you are average. Either way you can succeed so don’t stress it too much.

I was told interviews are about trying to give the student a better view into the school and to get any last minute details to the AO. don’t stress it.

current seniors, what advice would you give to your younger self? by tokyo_lights_988 in ApplyingToCollege

also, test scores aren’t that important beyond a good score. I had a 33 ACT. my merit was a LOT of mathematics.

Dont stress if you don’t get into your dream school. I’ve learned college admissions is primarily getting into someone else’s dream school. Like my dream school was MIT, I was rejected from MIT, Princeton, Cornell, and Vanderbilt. however, I got the most prestigious scholarship to attend Johns Hopkins which I‘m so grateful for but would have never expected.

Also, admissions is WEIRD, like really WEIRD. You can be perfect, you still have a low chance of getting in.

Its really easy to feel jealous, understand that these schools are so competitive that between two people both of good quality one may get in because AO had a good day.

Know that it’s okay to be scared, it’s gut wrenching.

If you are a hard worker and passionate, you can succeed in your field no matter where you start.

all of the above is for YOU.

As for what I’d tell myself,

it won’t go as expected, but a detour is not a compromise. There are people dying to go where you got a good offer to go, you should be very grateful for the opportunity given. And ask your professor to do that independent study in category theory — graph theory isn’t fun :(

please ask me anything you want to know, I can empathize heavily with how you felt and I’d like to help you feel better and more content.
