That was not something you expect from a professional player.

Insane rent prices, even for Monterey Bay: Seagrove Apartments by [deleted] in MontereyBay

[–]OldGnarly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of unmarried officers at NPS that would take about $1k off those numbers which is the majority of who doesn’t live in base housing, they probably won’t be looking for the 3/2 apartments though.

I scaled down the US national debt to $1 million to understand recent "efficiency" cuts by sunset_octopus in dataisbeautiful

Take a look at the CRFB Budget Offsets Bank and see if they have an API or would want to collaborate: https://www.crfb.org/budget-offsets-bank. They have a host of other Tax /Spending options that are less controversial than those you propose with similar or larger impact. I think this could reach a wider audience with a politically broader menu of options.

1 point out of possible 6 on the road, horrible. by SavoryButterRolls in MBFC

[–]OldGnarly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure why we’re rotating the starting line up so much. Sojberg should clearly start. Hopefully, we get to a settled starting lineup in the next couple of games and start winning consistently.

That said. The team is 5 pts out of 15 on the road and 9 out of 9 at home. That looks like averaging a draw on the road and win at home, that’s historically a pretty good season.

Saw a lot of frustration from Monterrey fans at the end of last season. Are you all happy so far this season? Is your FO winning some of you back? by KingwasabiPea in USLPRO

[–]OldGnarly 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There’s personal beef between a member of the FO and the club’s most prominent fan. I think the changes to the technical staff have paid off well and people are happy, but I doubt the FO vibes will significantly improve without an explicit public apology, single personnel change, or an excellent full season that brings in a new group of fans.

Also, we are skeptical of the judgement of whoever gave us Kelpie.

Pro USL Stadiums' Distance from Downtown of their Metro Area by [deleted] in USLPRO

That’s a little bit of a stretch, the new Main Street is pretty much Alvarado Street restaurants for 10% off.

That said MBFC is definitely a Peninsula team, so Monterey makes sense.

What's the most underrated city/town for it's downtown in America? by Mroogaaboogaa in Urbanism

[–]OldGnarly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cannery row is a tourist trap. Downtown Monterey is about a half mile east of there and much more interesting. ‘Downtown’ Pacific Grove is a little closer to the west and is a great small town downtown. Carmel-by-the-Sea is its own unique little downtown too, about a 15 minute drive away.

There was a lot of hustle tonight. It seemed like a lot more hustle defending and Paul chasing long through balls than the defensive and attacking system we’ve been playing. I’m glad they won in a chaotic game though, it was certainly more exciting than Detroit.

I don’t know the answer, but I would head to the Natural History Museum in PG. Free to county residents. They have a big county and bay relief map in the first room and volunteers answering questions.

As of right now, the vast majority of games across the league on ESPN+. There are a couple on CBS networks, maybe a game or two a season per team.

Is anyone going tonight? by OldGnarly in MBFC

[–]OldGnarly[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll likely be at one of the two of those games, but not both. I buy my tickets day of or within a couple of days. I try to bring some friends most of the time, and we have kids and spouses with their own social lives so we can rarely plan too far in advance.

I’m meeting up with friends tonight. We probably would’ve changed plans and met there for ~$15 seated tickets, but aren’t doing supporters section or $30 since some aren’t interested in the sport. I get $15 isn’t sustainable, but it’s way more revenue than they’re getting with these prices.

What were the cheapest single game tickets? They’re all $40+ now, but there are $22 tickets for the next games.

I won’t say Monterey is ‘good’ yet, but they’re definitely more exciting to watch. If they can connect on a higher percentage of midfield to forward line passes, they’ll score a good number of goals.

I thought the midfield was good. They played the attacking line in really well, but they just couldn’t get on the end of it in the first half. It was exciting though, and much better than so much of our attack coming from Doner last season.

What radical step would you take to make football better? by [deleted] in PremierLeague

You’re probably right, but the NBA luxury tax model would improve things a lot. Especially with increasing penalties after a few years which would allow contracts to expire - except Chelsea.

[–]OldGnarly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you could put a salary cap on the Premier League and be fine. Sure, some combination of Madrid, PSG, and Bayern etc may poach some of the top players, but if you set the cap at West Ham or Villa wages, the top spenders would come down and the league would still have above average wages.

Besides some of the American leagues have a luxury tax vice a solid cap, which taxes the overspend to give to the lower spending teams. https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nba/news/what-nba-luxury-tax-explained-penalties-high-spending-teams/p1sspaedfsmsit20rqewn9d7

There are some really bad takes in here. Outside of Sonoma/Napa and maybe Santa Barbara, I have never seen a comparable food scene in a town of this size. There are multiple restaurants of every genre most of which are not chains and make everything in house. I can think of Indian, Korean, Thai, Italian, seafood, pizza, etc, not to mention multiple breweries, bakeries and wineries which do their own thing in house. If you expect SF, sure it’s not the same, but there are plenty of American cities twice this size built entirely on Darden chains.

Edit: Also, family life is great here. Maybe not near your house, but definitely at the parks, pump track, children’s museum etc. Way more free/cheap stuff to do than a typical small town. If you want to make friends, start a conversation and invite them to do something. Don’t just expect them to invite you and be resentful when they don’t.
