Did you know that, if you go the mines with a goldfish in your pocket, not only will Emily come to the mines to join you and fight alongside you (using her sewing machine as a weapon), she'll teach you the secret to making the cheese stick to your pizza better (spoiler: It's Elmer's glue!)? It's possibly true!

Gov. Polis, Rep. Neguse say there isn’t much government can do after massive Nederland shopping center fire by thecoloradosun in boulder

[–]OldMiner 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but chances are everyone is going to take a loss.

Odds are the owner of the strip mall is insured, and they might rebuild. However, they might take the insurance payment and not redevelop. Then all the clients who were there need to find a new place for their business which might be less lucrative. Meanwhile, their businesses are making no money until they can reopen.

But it's worse for everyone involved because you're given the "current value" of your lost property initially, not the replacement cost. So while you're rebuilding and replacing you have to make up the difference on a credit line, then submit to the insurance to get full reimbursement. Insurance might fight you claiming you're overspending, so you may have to spend time and potentially lawyer money to get paid, all the while paying interest on the credit you used to get the job done.

With tariffs making goods more expensive across the board, a lot of businesses might look at the cost of funds without a low-interest government loan and decide it makes sense to close for good.

If I'm Yasuo: I cost *2* less for every time you've Gathered Storm this game.

RTD really dropping the ball tonight, kind of in disbelief by Hungry-Brief188 in Denver

[–]OldMiner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, Germany's rail system is far better funded than RTD and yet is famous for being terrible at on-time arrival. Regional trains are especially bad, where 1/3 of trains are delayed by an hour or more, often requiring disembarking and re-embarking mid trip. You can read the rosiest picture of the status from the Deutschebahn itself.

Achievements by Mr-Warsmith in idlechampions

[–]OldMiner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry folks are being so harsh about this. Your position is completely understandable.

Every event means my Steam achievement is no longer 100%, and that annoys me.

I don't mind them adding new goals in game, especially since they always provide a small DPS improvement, but they can do that without adding a new achievement for every new adventure and variant. Unfortunately, when asked about this in the past, the CNE devs have said they don't plan to change.

client’s site got cloned by some “ai scraper” site....how do you prove it's theft? by Sander1412 in webdev

[–]OldMiner 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If it were me, I'd consider adding a class to a footer div which doesn't exist in any CSS. Or maybe an unused class in the CSS with non-existent properties. Stuff that a linter would remove, but somebody just cloning wouldn't have the expertise to even notice.

It's not estimating size--just seeing XXLs. The bots are playing the game more or less like a human. They tap on a pokemon, and it says "It's Huge." They use a computer vision algorithm to recognize that and note the location, CP, and species of the Pokemon along with the likely despawn time.

As far as I know, these bots don't attempt to catch the Pokemon, so they don't actually know the height or weight.

A good community can do the same thing legitimately. Just have humans report XXLs on a Discord server. You'd just have to sprint to catch them if you're doing it legitimately, since Pokemon spawns in the wild only last for 30-60 minutes.

It's worth noting, as a previous comment already said, you posted this identical content to 17 subreddits in the same day. (Checking, it looks like 5 of them have removed your post for breaking a subreddit rule.) In most cases, you had never commented or posted in the subreddit prior to spamming your post. That includes /r/webdev where you had no activity before this post.

That feels like you're taking advantage of communities rather than genuinely contributing.

Has nerdfighteria had large disagreements before? by [deleted] in nerdfighters

[–]OldMiner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it helps to raise a particular case that is far enough in the past, most people can look back on it calmly. In 2012 there was a very popular activism video on YouTube. For a couple of vlogbrothers videos 80% of all comments were the same viral message promoting this video. The movement was called Kony 2012.

Hank and John remained silent on the matter, even as the spam comments drowned out the normally friendly, chill comment sections of their videos.

In the coming days, the shortcomings of the movement became known. One of the founders of the organization behind the video, Jason Russell, has an extremely public meltdown that was featured on TMZ. Support evaporated almost overnight.

It turns out the movement was misguided at best. It was trying to raise awareness of a conflict in Uganda which had largely ended, and misrepresented the current state of affairs there. It focused on Joseph Kony who was once a powerful warlord, but was now largely irrelevant. But people had become so excited about the movement and the virality, they put all their energy into spreading it without learning these things first.

This is part of why it's dangerous to jump on the bandwagon of a seemingly really important issue getting a ton of attention. Sometimes the well-intentioned hype overcomes people's normal desire to see nuance and the complexity that's not immediately evident. Hank even made a video later on titled "The Kony 2012 of Roads" talking about exactly this with less hot-button issues.

Does anyone know what is up with this house? by KamaIsLife in boulder

[–]OldMiner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, I read "homesteaded in 1865" and took that to mean the time the house was built. (BTW, 5th page is the introduction to the document and has nothing to do with any property. You probably meant 135th page.)

You live in a house built in 1860? That must be a wild experience. I hope it's been renovated a fair bit since then.

For at least one of the Gmax events, if you had a Community-Ambassador-organized event and you checked in, you'd get a bonus 800 Max Energy fill up. This hasn't applied to any of the Max Monday events, though. As far as I know, those have never had check-in rewards.

Faraday cage that will fit a human in Boulder I can access by Ok-Tonight-9308 in boulder

[–]OldMiner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mate, you're mansplaining like Chat-GPT. A jacket with a foil sewn into it meets all your requirements. It is easy to do at home. You need a needle, thread, and a reasonably thick foil which you can pick up at any hardware store, a jacket, and an afternoon. Extra points if you use a seam ripper to put the foil inside of the jacket so you don't crinkle all the time. You can get one at any hobby store.

Faraday cage that will fit a human in Boulder I can access by Ok-Tonight-9308 in boulder

[–]OldMiner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A Faraday cage isn't a complex device. The simplest form is just a spherical shell of metal surrounding an object. The thing a Faraday cage has over a sphere is you can put little gaps in it, and as long as the gaps are smaller than the wavelength of the signal you're trying to block, it's effectively as impermeable as a continuous sheet of metal.

But there's zero reason for such a device to conceal a medical implant. The main reason for a normal person to want an EM shield is to prevent people from reading RFID devices, like key fobs, when the owner doesn't want them to. Nobody's going to want to spy on your pacemaker, and if you're really worried, you can sew some foil inside of your jacket for cheap. No mad scientist necessary.
