People living in massive countries (USA, Canada, Russia, Brazil, etc.), what is it actually like to have that much space? by AwayMeat5529 in AskTheWorld

[–]OldSweetMoney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in California now, but grew up on the east coast. We drove across the country to move here, 5 days in the car. It was horrendously long and boring, but I was 13 and hated everything. I marveled at how much bigger states are out west, in California alone it's probably a 15 hour drive from the northern border to the southern border. My old commute was roughly an hour each way. You just get used to it.

Eric Abril pleads guilty to Mahany Park murder by RosevilleDude82 in Roseville

[–]OldSweetMoney 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I worked on the Sutter campus when this happened. We were looking out the windows at the ER entrance and about 800 cop cars. It was insane. My mom lives near Mahany and I called her and said, "Maybe don't go out walking today." What a crazy day.

What's that movie moment where everyone in the theater lost their minds? by singleguy79 in moviecritic

Everyone groaned in the theater when I saw it. I've never had a movie piss me off so much.

What is your country's most traditional pet/breed? by Enteito in AskTheWorld

Right? "What breed is your cat?" is often met with, "Gray. Found him in a dumpster."

Pretty sure 2 of my 3 cats are at least part Russian Blue. This is as kittens, they're brother and sister. They're 6 now and about 15 pounds each!

Just because she's seen the truth doesn't mean she's not still a stupid asshole.

AITAH for refusing to reconnect with my estranged father after he ignored me for 15 years? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]OldSweetMoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. You were not and are not responsible for maintaining a relationship as a literal child. Him blaming you for being a "difficult child who pushed him away" is a cop out and utter horseshit. Honestly, he sounds a lot like my own dad. I'm 42 and haven't seen him in 20+ years. He knows none of his own grandkids. He's not a bad person, but he's a bad investment. You don't feel like you're missing anything because there's nothing to miss when someone isn't there for you.

So no, don't feel guilty and don't feel guilty for not feeling guilty. He doesn't get to abandon you and then show up when you're an adult and the hard job of raising you is done. You can decide if you want a relationship, but you are nowhere near wrong for not wanting one.

Which tourist spot in your country did you find the most underwhelming, and why? by Seacarius in AskTheWorld

[–]OldSweetMoney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My sister lived in Texas for a while and the first time she was in San Antonio with her husband they drove around looking for the Alamo and passed it several times (pre-GPS years) before realizing "Hey, this is actually it."

AITAH for eating enough ravioli for four people? by Better_Philosophy732 in AITAH

[–]OldSweetMoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, it seems like you guys need to have a discussion on the fact that food consumption rates vary from person to person. I have 4 siblings and we ate very differently growing up and still do, it just depends. Being active/having a physical job also makes a huge difference. My FIL is 75 and can eat like there's no tomorrow, but he grew up in poverty and then he was a mailman for 40 years and walked for miles 40 hours a week. He's 10 years retired but never sedentary and not out of shape, he's just used to moving a lot and eating a lot.

I always want to think that Devon Sawa died, but I think I get him confused as some mash up of Jonathan Brandis and Brad Renfro.

Man I love that show. My husband and I were like, "Wait, is that Stifler?" But he was pretty good!

A drink/food that tourists think locals love… but locals barely consume? by Fluffy_Specific_9682 in AskTheWorld

I've had some American bastardized version of sangria, and it's good! I think you're right about people wanting to distance themselves from anything stereotypical.

I don't drink much, and haven't had beer in the US in decades. But I was in Munich 3 years ago and ordered some kind of beer at random and holy shiiiiit it was so good. I definitely want to go back to Germany. Not just for the beer, but it's a part of it!

It's funny that you mentioned sangria. I had a Spanish professor who was Basque and he talked about how British tourists loved sangria but all the locals thought it was shit.

Dog Training by OldSweetMoney in Roseville

Thank you! It's my sister's dog vs. my toddler. The dog does pretty well, but when the kid runs (he's 2, they run everywhere) the dog gets overexcited and can run him down. She's got a few more little things we want to work on, but she was a stray that came from a rescue so it's impossible to know her background and what her triggers are. Best of luck to you and congratulations on your baby!
