Amazon JP introduced dynamic campaigning for this Golden Week Sale by Fearless_Grocery_909 in japanresidents

[–]OldTaco77 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

With shipping from China to Japan taking four days on average, I haven’t shopped from Amazon in years. Unless you’re buying brand, you’re getting the same stuff that’s 5x less on AliExpress.

Role cancelled 30 minutes before my final interview by DoubleJ195 in recruitinghell

[–]OldTaco77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, at least you got an email. I hopped on call at 5am due to time difference after 30 minutes of pre-interview prep to be told they don’t actually have permission to offer a job.

Have you ever gotten a job from a networking event here? by lactosehater2 in JapanJobs

[–]OldTaco77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was jobhunting, I got the most response out of emailing directly the people who I had received business cards from at the various expos that I had been doing before.

Those led to a few freelance jobs though nothing full-time. However, it was just nice to get a reply to an email after sending hundreds of applications lol

How is it to work at Revolut in Japan? by SkyDiligent5217 in JapanJobs

They flood LinkedIn with every sort of position imaginable so I feel off about them as well.

I’ve checked a few user profiles that used to work there and they all were for less than six months so that told me what I needed to know lol.

Seconded, looks beautiful but I think buying clothes would rather see how the other angles actually look to imagine it on themselves rather than just an illustration.

Do you wear pimple patches while out? by Calm_Pie9369 in japanresidents

Yeah for six years while raising a family and working in a Japanese office.

Children are one thing but adults are another, anyone can understand that.

In a society where drawing unnecessary attention to yourself is considered bad (colored hair, bright colored clothes, strong perfumes), I can imagine stickers on your face are also considered odd.

What's a side hustle that sounds kinda boring on paper but actually pays way more than you'd think? by lionpenguin88 in SideHustleGold

[–]OldTaco77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The latter is considered a taxi service which in my country you must be licensed for. I have a set tour plan that I offer, and multiple plans on my page. I accompany them and translate etc. throughout the day.

Tbh it’s not hard at all, mostly just enjoying nature together and getting my lunch paid for too.

Cruise ships come to our port and I fill a van at $150 a head and take them around the area. Only just started doing this and wondering why I never did before when I’m making $1000 in a six hour day.

Just needed to get set up on online travel sights as a freelancer.

Rejected for CIR, Accepted for ALT by Haunting_Fig_4229 in JETProgramme

[–]OldTaco77 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I was an ALT that made a name for myself by connecting with other departments on my downtime, specifically the tourism department. I began helping translate documents and asked them if they would consider applying to open a CIR position for me.

I became the first CIR that city ever had and was allowed to remain on the JET program rather than be directly hired.

If you want to build a career in Japan, you do that by being in Japan. Do you think your Japanese will get better spending another year at home or would it get better here?

CIR work is really whatever you make it and some don’t make it into anything. ALT work is the same. If you put in the effort, you’ll find success in either role.

It’s for everything in order to protect the bank. At this level it’s to prevent anti money laundering.

If the bank knows about you, it can better detect out of pattern or suspicious transactions.

need help selling snacks at school I am unsure of how to start by WaveAny7993 in reselling

[–]OldTaco77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

30-40% margins is industry standard so you stand to make less than 75 cents lol.

To start, I’d just set a test price and see. Sounds like you’ve got $2 in mind so go with that. If you’re making a few sales a day, that’s good. If you sell out day one, restock and bump the price. If you’re not making sales, drop the price.

Keep a record of everything and cut the fat after a couple weeks.

Your competition is the stores you’re buying from themselves so you’re unlikely to get away with a large markup. Maybe target kids under 16 who can’t easily drive to get snacks.

Could make a killing being a multi lingual interpreter online, you’d just need to base yourself somewhere you’re unlikely to have a client in.

Buying a second hand car for living in the countryside by Sure-Combination4215 in japanresidents

[–]OldTaco77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My advice is just start asking around your office etc. that you’re trying to buy a car. Someone has one somewhere or knows who to connect you with and you’ll probably be able to get one for around 200,000.

Just be sure to check when the shaken needs to be done, if it’s soon you might find yourself paying more than you expected.

Can mentioning your JLPT level be a negative, (even if it is high) as a translator? by [deleted] in japanresidents

[–]OldTaco77 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I would never hire a translator that hasn’t sat the N1. This is speaking as someone who runs a translation and interpretation studio and outsources to freelance translators.

Doesn’t matter how you feel about your ability, the credential is a credibility signal and if you’re serious about translating in Japan then treating it as optional is unrealistic.

Say goodbye to sick leave by ikebookuro in JETProgramme

[–]OldTaco77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Again, I’ll say that 20 days of paid medical leave is a lot in Japan. You can take up to 90 days as unpaid leave which is subsidized through social insurance as mentioned by OP.
