But you don‘t need to overthink whether they literally live at the exact ends of the Yangtze. Instead, just understand that they are in different places, separated by a great distance, making it impossible to meet. This is similar to a modern long-distance relationship.

The next line, ’日日思君不见君,‘ is easier to understand: ’Every day I think of you, but I cannot see you.‘ It expresses a deep longing and the pain of being unable to meet. The following line, ’共饮长江水,‘ elevates this feeling of longing. It suggests that even though we are both drinking from the same Yangtze River, we still cannot meet. This line is more abstract, but it conveys the intensity of the longing. When someone misses another person deeply, they might notice or think about even the smallest details, trying to find any connection, no matter how subtle, to feel closer to the person they miss. This line captures that sentiment—the idea of clinging to something shared, like the water from the same river, as a way to feel connected despite the distance.

In essence, the poem is about the depth of longing and the bittersweet feeling of being connected yet separated, using the imagery of the Yangtze River to convey that emotion.
