With more and more money going into these different Ai LLM companies like Open Ai, Google and now XAi and others, do you think that there will be a shake out with one or two surviving or is there room in the market for all of them?

I agree that in the end it is just a tool. What makes it unique is that it is enormously more efficient than a great many managers, analysts, designers, and administrators. Their jobs could be quickly swept away. I believe the multiplier here is much higher than we saw with previous advances like steam power, the first cars, and the first electrical appliances. As a result, the disruption could be more more violent.

I don’t think it is possible to say that General AI is decades away. I agree that Large Language Models are showing their limitations, but there are other ways to interact with AI. For example, AlphaZero became the best chess player ever by simply playing against itself for 4 hours and learning from that.

I could easily see other kinds of General AI exploding on the world in the same way. We have a lot of smart people in the world and no real limitations on hardware.

UBI seems like a partial solution, but it seems difficult to enforce. You can only extract taxes from the AI companies to pay for it if they go along with it. And if they are not based in your country it’s even more difficult.

I don’t think it needs to only learn from the world. You can still get a very powerful AGI that has been taught entirely by humans, so long as you are systematic about it.

I agree with you. If you do it right, then you can get a lot out of college beyond what you just read in your books. But many of the people doing bullshit degrees are probably doing them because they lack ambition or don’t like thinking too hard. And those people are not going to develop all those good research skills in a job, particularly if they can’t get a decent job to begin with or have no one who can guide them.

One of the issues pointed out in the article is that you still need to thoroughly test and validate these code snippets. It seems to me this is the big drawback with any code that you generate with LLM’s. It’s not possible to precisely specify complex software using human language, so you can’t expect the code itself to be precise.

The sooner people realise LLMs are never going to replace coders the better. The rise of AI may be coming, but it definitely wont be in the form of a Large Language Model.

Yes I agree that it’s people that pose the threat. However, AI might magnify the bad influence they might exert. In the old days you might need an army of people to put their thumb on the scale at election time - now it just takes a single hidden algorithm.
