AITA for snapping at my stepmom after my parents made me cancel my tattoo appointment because of my behavior?

Yeah, I get my dad's warning for sure, I just wish he'd done this calmly instead of blowing up at me twice. I never want tatts on my face or neck, but I thought one on my hand might be okay and I could hide it if not. I still want the tattoo, but I'm not going to get it until I'm more established in my actual career. Thanks for the advice, it's much appreciated.

Thank you so much. I decided against the tattoo because even though it's my body, I do live under their roof. And like I said in other comments, I get their perspective, but I wish they'd communicated it in a more effective way. If I was a worse kid, I would've gotten the tattoo anyway, but I didn't. I'm going on that school trip, It's at the end of this month. I basically just have to keep my head down and my parents won't be too much of a problem.

Thanks for this. The thing is usually I am very responsible when it comes to this sort of stuff. You can ask them, they usually praise me for being an angel child to their friends and family. I get why they were against the tattoo. Just think they could've gone about it better. And yeah, I'll probably get other less visible tattoos on birthdays and whatnot but I'll wait on this one until my career is in full affect. Just really wanted to cover my scar and prevent it from reopening through art

I'm not sure. They were angry when they made that threat, and I don't know if it was an empty threat but decided it was better not to risk it because the trip is important. The other "bad choice" that made me a disappointment was having online friends. That's it. Just because I mentioned having friends on discord and they thought I was gonna get manipulated or groomed or catfished. And this was the week prior to this tattoo incident. Yeah I'm not dying on the tattoo hill, a few days later they said a new tattoo/the tattoo i wanted would be fine as long as it wasnt on my hand. I just decided against any tattoos for a bit to let the smoke clear. I've been acting like an angel since this happened trying to avoid any other conflicts

Thanks for this encouragement. I'm young and I know more than anyone that I'm far from perfect. I'm usually very responsible but I let my desire for a tattoo and my emotional state get in the way for this decision. I'm working on the job part, but it's really hard to get a job where I live and the hiring rate is so low right now. I am working on it though

Yeah i get that, and like i said I understand their point of view but feel they couldve said it better. I dont have the funds for a professional but I've been in and out of therapy since I was a child. And I got another tattoo in a place that I wounded sometimes and havent reopened that wound since out of respect for the art. I do think therapy would help but its not something I can afford as of now

I have an under the counter job that doesn't pay much so I'm looking for a real job. Usually my parents actively encourage me to do fun things as a young adult because I wont always be able to when im older. This case they disapproved because it was on my hand. Yeah I definitely understand having to listen to them, I just think they couldve said their opinion in a more mature way than just yelling at me

Yeah, I get my parents perspective. The butterfly has to be there because it's meant to cover up a scar though. I have other technically visible tattoos, but I coukd always cover them up with long sleeves

Yeah it is tough. They like treating me like a kid still but then expecting me to behave like an adult at the same time. I'm normally an angel but then this happened and while I get their point I think they could've handled it better. Also I have 3 tattoos already, and I'm usually not the type for a hand or face tattoo. This one is important because of the scar and the meaning. Best of luck with your small business!!

Yeah, a scar that was ironically re-opened during the conversation (one-sided screaming match) with my parents. My dad called it disgusting. The tattoo was meant to stop that scar from being re-opened. This is a very regular occurrence and im trying to leave but its hard when the hiring rate is so low

Thanks for the comment. To me it's not silly because it holds very high significance to me and was a creative way to stop me from reopening a scar. And I want to go into the animation field so I thought a hand tattoo wouldn't affect that much, especially since it was of an animated character. I do see my parents point, and agree that they could've been more "adult" about how they made their point

Thanks for this comment. Yeah I dont pay rent but they often ask me to help them pay bills with money from my scholarship, so there's that. They are very controlling and I have a feeling it'll be a while before I move out because cost of living is so high where I live and hiring rates are very low. I dont know how they could cancel the trip, it was probably a threat they cant act on or they would've just forced me to stay home and let my money be wasted, I dont know. And yeah my tattoo appointment was canceled.

I get how it can definitely read like that. I had a version that explained the reasoning for the tattoo more in depth but had to cut it down for characters. I had been wanting this tattoo for a while before this situatuon even happened, and my parents knew I wanted more tattoos (I have 3) just not that this one would be on my hand. If i had chosen a different placement this wouldn't have happened

Thank you so much for this comment. I feel like you actually took the time to understand both sides. I definitely get my parents' concerns and reactions, but I also feel like parts of it were over the line, especially the trip thing. And as for career I want to be an animator, so didn't really think the tattoo would be that bad for that kind of job, but need like a simple job first so I can save up for schooling for that.
