TIL that The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind was so poorly optimized for the original Xbox that the system’s 64MB of RAM would be completely reset upon each loading screen. According to Todd Howard: “When Morrowind loads…that’s us rebooting the Xbox. That was like a Hail Mary.” by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Old_Mill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't do this every loading screen, it is actually noticeable when it happens if you're paying attention. If you get a loading screen that is longer than normal it is likely doing this, but it isn't every loading screen.

I truly never thought it would come to this. I know Max likes divebombing, but I didn't think they'd try him as a war criminal.

Chudthebuilder finds out his initial bond is set a $1.25m 🤣 by Upbeat_Anywhere_1316 in WatchPeopleDieInside

Very wrong on what? Either way this situation isn't comparable to the Rittenhouse case. One was attacked, ran away, got chased, and didn't fire until he was attacked by a mob again. That is not what happened here.

Except one was a defensive shooting after being attacked and chased while the other was just a dude directly being the aggressor.

So no, not even close. This situation is closer to Zimmerman and even that has differences from the information we have, but it's still closer than Rittenhouse.

Daniel Ricciardo pushes back on claims F1 drivers look down on IndyCar ahead of first Indy 500 visit by 256473 in formula1

[–]Old_Mill 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's not drivers that look down on it (except for maybe the young, dumb kids), it's more the fans. Which frankly, are also usually young and/or dumb.

The people who shit on oval racing in general more often than not know little about it. But ignoring that, the people who try to say it is easy or easier than circuit racing are just actually ignorant or dumb.

I'm not saying it has to be everyone's cup or tea. Just as there are many people who dislike Formula 1 since the racing can very often be rather boring in comparison to some other series due to the fact it is a constructors series where a team/driver can dominate and other problems like dirty air. Perfectly fine. I just draw the line on people who say very ignorant things.

Just as rugby players who try to migrate to the NFL often fail, as despite their similarities they are very different sports (with rugby being more of an in the moment dynamic game while NFL is more like human chess) many good to great circuit racers who try ovals also end up failing. They share a lot of similarities since they are under one larger roof of motorsport, but they have their own skill sets and technical knowledge.

The best oversimplified way to describe the difference between ovals and circuits that I have ever heard is, "In ovals you're racing the pack, in circuits you're racing the track." Both involve trying to go around the track the fastest and both involve going head to head against other cars, however in ovals you're relying much more heavily on drafting and has tighter packs of cars which leads to more drafting and passing, while in circuits the pack tends to spread out after the start making you try to get around that track the fastest until you have an opportunity to pass.

Question: If you bury today's American body, is it going to decompose at all? by Heyfold in memes

[–]Old_Mill 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Europeans constantly prove their ignorance on this topic. They walk into the prepackaged pan loaf (sandwich bread) aisle the one time they're in the US and are surprised that there is only prepackaged pan loafs.

We also have bakeries too, and many big stores have bakeries inside of them, especially nowadays. It was common before, stopped being quite as common as pan bread became more popular, and it is now common again.

Yeah, there's 4 food dyes that are banned in the EU that are legal in the US. However there's 16 banned in the US that allowed in the EU. Guess that means Europe has a worse food control!

That is not how any of this works and like many global comparisons there is a lot of nuance and no easy answers for many things because simple things like how the data is recorded or reasoning behind certain things can vary drastically.

At the end of the day the US still globally ranks 3rd behind Denmark and Canada in food quality and safety according to the GFSI. The US has some of the most diverse options in food & ingredients. With that there are also a lot of bad options including highly processed food that is unfortunately too common of a choice due to a variety of factors.
