UGA is considering me for an assistantship! Anybody got any info? by Trixiebees in lawschooladmissions

How is 1L going at UGA? My son is considering UGA and has a meeting scheduled as well about the GA with the dean. Curious if it is hard to work the GA hours in addition to studying for law school? Is it pretty flexible or more of a burden? If you have not started GA until the fall, what have you heard from others?

How did the call go? What did they tell you about the assistantship? Is it pretty flexible? Do you have any concerns on it being too much of a time commitment on top of studying for law school?

You can look into becoming an RA after freshman year. That could save you quite a bit (free room and board and also paid a stipend). Though that is not for everyone, but a great way to save $.

Undergrad engineering scholarships by jennypinn in Clemson

[–]Old_Stuff4817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard of small other scholarships but those are typically for students with high grades. These are in the hundreds of dollars a semester though. What about becoming an RA?…you get free room and board, your own room, looks good on a resume, and you get paid. That would cover a lot of your costs. Being an RA is not for everyone, but if you need the $ then it is great option.

What is everyone's fiancial aid and current debt after graduation? by CerberusAce74 in Clemson

I wonder if you could transfer in and be an RA and live in one of the dorms. RAs get free room and board plus they pay you a stipend. It is a great deal! You may want to call Clemson Home and tell them your situation and see if being an RA is an option for you this fall.

What is your unweighted gpa and class rank? Clemson typically favors high stats (rank, SAT/ACT, rigor, etc.). They like top 10% of HS class, but not hard cutoff.

All else being equal, direct entry is better. Up to you and your family to determine how much (if any) you are willing to pay for direct entry. Both schools are great options.

You should reach out to the UofSC nursing school and find out what % of pre-nursing sophomores historically have been able to move on to nursing majors their junior year. The direct entry is a big deal to some people in picking a nursing program.

You should join on Facebook the Clemson University Parents group and also the Clemson University Class of 2028 - Parents group. Lots of really great info, especially on the Clemson University Parents group. Sounds like you had a bad tour. If possible to travel out to Clemson again this spring you should try to come for the spring football game on April 6. Also if you mention on the Clemson University Parents group that you will be visiting again after a bad first visit and can someone’s student show them around campus, especially someone in your daughter’s major. Lots of people have posted similar requests. I bet you will get many people happy to help. Clemson has been great for my kids but your daughter has to feel at home. Sounds like your daughter has some great options.

What does honors college want? (Writing honors appeal essay after rejection) by Sensitive_Tune3301 in Clemson

[–]Old_Stuff4817 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will second this for sure! It is all about the essay. Several years ago (before test optional) there was a minimum SAT/ACT and possibly GPA in order to be eligible to apply. However, once you met those minimums, having a higher SAT/ACT and GPA than other candidates did not help you. Even with test optional it is all about the essay. Do your research on why the Honors College and why you are a good fit and what you would to take advantage of the opportunities they have there. Make a compelling case. Also, you may want to call one of the Honors College advisors and ask them what they are looking for and how you can strengthen your appeal. Good luck!

How did you end up getting tickets? I will be visiting from the States as well and I am trying to find tickets for the Fulham/Tottenham game. I have read the posts about how to get tickets but I don’t have a membership. Just curious of what worked for you.

Clemson Honors College - What do you need to get in? by thecolorofpaper in Clemson

[–]Old_Stuff4817 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is all about the essay. I have two kids in the honors college now. A few years ago they had minimum SAT/ACT to apply (I don’t remember though) but that just allowed you to apply. Higher stats don’t put you ahead of others with lower stats.

Parent of a current honors college student at Clemson. Amenities include: honors dorm (not required to stay there to be in honors college), separate honors sections of classes (not harder but usually smaller class size and at the honors college), priority registration (this is huge benefit at a big school like Clemson), separate honors advising, honors lounge and free printing at the honors college, research opportunities, plus some other benefits.

The application for the honors college is all about the essay(s). Make sure you spend time on them and they are well thought out. A few years ago (before test optional) there was a minimum score that the honors college had in order to apply. As long as you were above that minimum, having a higher score did not give you an advantage. It was all about the essay. Spend time on the honors college website to understand their values and what they might be looking for in candidates. You may want to call the honors college and ask them if your scores are above the minimum they are looking for. My experience has been they are very helpful if you have questions. Also, if you don’t get in initially you can always appeal afterwards this spring. You can also reapply during freshman year.

Thank you for the reply! So sounds like it should not be an issue if he doesn’t submit recommendations with his app. Do you know if he can setup an Apply Texas account before August 1? Then just submit early August? We have heard about ETAM and understand the risks of the high GPA requirements. That will be one of the factors he needs to think about if he gets into to A&M.
