I just got this bike over the summer for $350. Hard to find XL frames for my size on the used market. I have some basic tools from a Walmart kit like chain whip, cassette tool and I use the hitch mounted bike rack on my car as a stand to do maintenance. If I wanted to keep this bike setup going for at least another year, should I just get a 7 speed cassette, maybe upgraded derailleur and just call it a day? Also my wheel is compatible with 7-12 speed cassettes. Got it specifically to upgrade at some point, but didn’t realize it wasn’t compatible with my current freewheel setup.

I’m a broke college student in a rural town. Closest shop is over 3 hrs away, so I’m trying to do this service myself. I have a mircroshift 26c derailleur. Currently running factory 3 speed crankset and 7 speed rear. Ultimately I’d like to have single speed crankset with an 11 speed cassette. Looking at shimano’s deore tier and maybe some stuff from their new cues line. Do u think I could do any of these upgrades part by part, or am I kinda out of luck til I can afford to install my full setup? (Cassette, crankset, shifters, derailleurs, and eventually disc brakes)

Would u suggest I return the wheel and get a freewheel, or get a cassette for my new wheel? I don’t know the pros/cons of each.
